So finally got it in the shop which was no fun since it would not move on its own. Got the oil drained in the rear end and found that it has only 2 bolts holding the ring gear in place and all the others are broke/gone. Any chance I can fix it by replacing all the bolts and then adjusting the ring and pinion or is there a good chance the pinion gear has missing teeth. The ring gear look to be good?? Been working on pulling the top plate/cover off and boy it looks to not be a fun thing to do. Lots of hyd lines to remove and then there is the transmission shifter to unhook etc. This is a 5 speed by the way. So any one who can throw in some info would be nice. I do have the I-T manual but it does not really fill in the blanks well.
THANKS

You need to tear it down. I never liked working on those models. It is much easier to take a 1086 apart as far as I am concerned. I have seen those 656 take the pinion bearing out also and tear up the ring and pinion. One thing I like to talk a customer into is getting rid of all those hydraulic lines that go forward from the aux valves. Can't get rid of the other lines but it helps to eliminate those. Have fun.

Yep they are 0 fun and lots of messing around . I have only been into about a dozen or so of them and like Pete i'll tear and 06-86 apart anyday over them , the broken bolt thing is a common problem and I think that there is some up grade on that. But it has been many years since i did the last one . So you are going to have to Split it and get the transmission and rear end off the center section and get it down to a bare case before your done . Do not mix up your shim pac's from side to side and you will have to do a complete set up when going back together as i am sure you will be replacing bearings and cups. Getting the proper preload is vary important . You you will need a depth mic and a dial indicator and some way of checking pinion bearing preload weather it be by a spring scale or and inch pound torque wrench . Now If you have to change the rind and pinion then your going to need the set up tool to get the correct pinion depth . The 656 -666-and the 686 was never on my to buy lists because if it was at a sale you could almost bet that the rear end was either OUT or on it's way , along with the T/A and the T/A was the least of the problems . Now this is hear say from several I H dealers that i knew they told me that the ones that were used on the plow were the ones that had the most problems as a lot of guys would try and run 4x16's with them . Yes they will pull them but it strains the bag off of them.

Ya have fun LOL looks like a plumbers night mare as for the hyd lines. And all of them have to come off before I can even get a look see into the ring and pinion area. Not often I mess with a tractor of this size and have had not 1 but 2 in the last month.

A friend of mine has a 686 that had the same issue, broken ring gear bolts. He was able to pull the PTO and working thu that hole remove the broken bolts and replace them with new. I was there when he was working on it, kind of a challenge but doable if nothing is damaged.

That is the problem unless I pull the top cover off I can not see the pinion gear to see how good or bad it is
