Glow Plug revival!

Hi
I've just recently acquired an International 434, which is a big improvement over the Yanmar I had previously.
A previous owner has replaced the ignition switch, which doesn't support the glow plug circuit.
I obviously need to fix this, and am thinking of installing a momentary switch, however the wiring puzzles me. I was assuming that current would run through the indicator resister, then through each glow plug, to earth, however the circuit diagram shows connections from the switch (item 89 in the attached JPG) to both sides of the indicator resistor (item 85)? I've posted a screen shot of the relevant part of the electrical circuit.
Can anyone clarify how the glow plug circuit should be wired up?

with out certainty of how the switch works, just looking at the schematics and understanding of glowplugs systems. terminal 3 on the ignition swith would be your glow plug on postion, terminal 6 would be your power to the glow plugs while cranking. it bypass the resistor during cranking due to volatage drop. im sure some one else will chime in, but just looking at it that is how i see it working

Hi, on the original key switch for the 434, to activate the glow plugs, you turned the key to ON position and pushed the key
inward and waited for indicator resistor on dash to glow and still holding the key inward turn the key to right to start
position. When the engine was warm you did not hold the key inward to start the tractor.
The dash indicator and the glow plugs are all wired in series with the front glow plug closest to the rad being grounded to the
engine block. Therefore if any glow plug or indicator resistor on dash burns out all glow stop working.
DO NOT put 12V across a glow plug or it will burn out.

Jdemaris posted how to convert the old glow plugs to a newer style glow plugs.

Hi

Thanks for the clarification. The switch I have doesn't support the glow plug 'push' action, so I'm intending to install a second switch just to do this. What I'm trying to work out is exactly what wires I need to connect up to this switch... I was assuming that as the indicator and glow plugs are (sort of) in a serial chain, I should just have to apply 12 volts at the glow plug end?

Don't you have the legend for the wiring diagram, that tells you what #85 and terminal #6 are?

I have to agree with Jasher452x's assessment. #6 is a bypass to provide power during cranking. It's the only logical reason for it to be connected that way.

For basic functionality, you want to install your momentary switch in place of terminal #3 on the switch. Battery power to your switch, then on to the indicator/resistor and the glow plugs.
