1970 International 624

Just bought this tractor to blow snow with next year. Mostly in good working condition. Starts and runs great. Power shift works great.

First of all. All my local dealers cringe when I call them about this German built tractor. Does anyone know a good source for new parts for this tractor? For the time being I need a rad cap, and a seal for the draft control plunger.. and proper filters.

Secondly. My main concern is that the PTO hand operated clutch does not work. I can not engage the PTO with the tractor running. I also notice diesel fuel leaking from the fuel tank, and dripping from the bottom of the bell housing - wondering if this has soaked the clutch and caused some damage. The hand clutch does have resistance, as if it is pushing the release bearing+pressure plate, but maybe not far enough. My manual says to adjust the lever itself, but my lever is solid and not adjustable at all. Any tips?

The manuals I downloaded on-line are pretty vague. Does anybody know how much I can see through the top bellhousing inspection cover? Can I inspect the PTO clutch as well as the main clutch?

Any help would be great.

I can't give you any repair advice to speak of but I have had a 624 in the past. It was in once to a private mechanic that split the tractor for a repair that cost 600 to 700 dollars. All
I can say is that they were very well made tractors. Our neighbour bought a new 524 in 1967 that has lots of hours on it with virtually no repairs done to it. It is understandable
that they can be hard to get parts for so many years later. I hope you get the help you need.

Hi, there were many 624s sold in Canada. Had a couple neighbors that had 624s. They were very good tractors with the German D-206
Diesel engine. The D-206 engine was later used in 584,595 and 3230. This series of IH tractors was the 523,624.724.824 and were
built in Neuss Germany and many parts were common.

Well a little digging reveals that my PTO clutch disc looks great. New spec is 8.9mm thick and I am measuring approximately 8.3-8.4mm. The disc is not stuck, I can move it back and forth on the splines with the clutch disengaged. A little excessive play between the release bearing and pressure plate fingers. Spec is 3mm. I am at about 5-6mm, with no more adjustment available. Seems to be working OK.

Does anybody have an idea as to why the PTO still grinds when engaging? Would it have anything to do with not having an implement attached in order to help slow the mechanism down? When at idle it's not too bad - kind of clunks into engagement, but with any RPM, I can not engage the PTO due to grinding.

Not so great news is that my engine clutch is worn pretty thin. The release bearing to pressure plate finger gap is minimal, almost touching. It does not slip at this time, so hopefully it will last a while longer. I will be using the powershift/shuttleshift for the most part.

Hi Mavrick,
I have an older model 624 and just had the same issue today. Far as I remember, last spring the PTO worked fine - now, it doesn't want to engage. I started the tractor with the PTO in gear and it worked, but when I took it out, it wouldn't go back in again (just grinding)'
I don't have the transmission manual for this machine.
Have you figured out anything new?
