More 460 hydraulic confusion

Hello all. I ordered a new filter for my 460 LP's hydraulic system from my CaseIH dealer, pretty expensive, but getting it right where it counts seems like the way to go, right? I'm not so sure. I pulled the cover off the filter housing, and it turns out there were no "filters" in it at all, at least not the little round ones that come two in a set. It did have a sort of filter that was sort of oblong shaped, with a NAPA number on it, but the little round filters from CaseIH would not fit inside it. There was no way they would fit inside it. And the instructions on the new ones said that there were two screws that held the filters in place as you were reinserting the whole assembly back into the housing...there were no screws in mine and more importantly, no evidence, ie, bolt holes, for two screws to screw into. I am beginning to wonder if the previous owner "substituted" an incorrect "outer" filter, the one with a NAPA number on it, and that that might explain why the new little "tandem" filters will not fit inside the outer one. Any thoughts? Thanks, Hugh

OH baby are you going to have fun. I crawled under our 460 many years ago with tools. a big bucked, dirty clothes, lots of ^%$$())*_&_&*. and those two little donuts. The other guys will fill you in but they are what I remember. All kinds of noise and stuff when they are full of Sh*&^. Jeffcat

A little history on 460 filters. Originally, the first 460's and 560's came with a screen only filter. It was oval shaped and could not be taken apart. As IH started to have some problems, they changed the filter to a screen one that looked like original but it could be taken apart and inside were the two donut paper filters. IH supplied this filter to all owners of tractors that had a fast hitch. All new ones came with it weather or not it had a fast hitch. Later, as newer models were introduced, like 656, the filter was changed to a total paper filter with a separate screen bypass valve. That is the filter of choice for all those tractors now days. I don't know what you have in there but I would go with the new paper filter and screen bypass. NOT cheap but you only need to buy the screen bypass valve one time. That donut style filter was a joke as far as I am concerned. Only a portion of the fluid actually went through the paper donuts depending on temp of fluid and condition of fluid and paper filter. All of course went through the screen outer portion which let a lot of contaminents into system.

The oblong shaped filter with the NAPA number on it is the updated paper filter that pete 23 describes.

Take the donut filters back and get the updated filter. It's available at the CaseIH dealer and should be much-much cheaper than the donut filters.

Thank you, mkirsch, jeffcat and especially pete 23 for the very helpful explanation of what the heck I have got in my 460. Hopefully, they will take back the two little donuts. I do happen to have the bypass part already, so I guess I should be glad that the worst of the expense is probably behind me. And yes, it does make a lot of noise like it is now. On to more adventures with this crazy tractor...

Local dealer sold me the donut things about 3 months ago, from the Kansas City distributer. I had replaced the one that was in the tractor with the paper filter you mentioned several years ago. Since it had only a few hours on it I left it in. Apparently the original number seems to be still in use or KC has had them around 60 years.

If you get a partsman who is not familiar with 50 year old tractors they are just going by what is in the parts listing.

Years ago they would write notes in the paper books about changes to remind them to furnish the updated parts. Today the electronic listings do not have any mention on the change to the newer filter. All they see is the original screen filter without the paper elements and the updated one with the two donuts.
