A Question Concerning a Manifold.

The manifold gasket had blown out on my 340 utility. I ordered a new one so I could fix the problem. The new gasket bolt holes are slotted, except two. Would it be so simple to just remove the two bolts, loosen the others, pull the manifold away from the head, slip out the old gasket, and slip the new one into place without completely removing the manifold? If that is the case, changing this gasket should be a breeze.

It would be best to pull that manifold, clean both the mounting surface on BOTH it and the head and check them both with a TRUE straight edge for
flatness. Chances are that manifold has a "spot" in it where the gasket blew out??? (idk) Would be a good time to have it resurfaced if its off.

You're not going to be able to "slip the old one out." It's well-fused to the manifold and/or the head.

Last one I had off, I spent a good hour chipping away at it on the manifold side to get it satisfactorily cleaned for reinstallation.

I replaced the gasket today. It must have been changed not too long ago. I did slip it out like I thought it would, and there wasn't anything stuck to the surfaces. The center exhaust ports did look like a little exhaust gas was seeping through. But not enough to get excited about. After I got everything back together the engine still makes that slapping/knocking sound. The manifold could still be leaking, or it could be ready to throw a rod. I'm getting a little disgusted with this thing. I'm going to keep running it, and if a rod does come through the block I'm going to take it to Dubuque and dump it in the river.

(quoted from post at 02:39:57 04/02/15) look for soot on the head. if i shows up, the manifold needs surfaced (probable) Jim

There's soot on the side of the engine block. I won't spend the money for a resurface for this manifold. I'll buy a new one before I'd do that. The one I have now had stripped threads where the pipe threads in. I messed with it yesterday trying to get it to stay put, and finally brazed it into place.
