Could I drill in oats and broadcast grass hay seed over the top and drag it in? I am using a M tractor

For many years, we had a broadcast spreader mounted on the back of the grain drill for grass seed.

We would drill the oats and broadcast the grass seed right behind. Afterwards, we would simply roll the field with a smooth heavy roller. It worked fine.

IMHO dragging would do more harm than good. It would drag up many of the oat seeds and bury many of the grass seeds too deep.

Honestly,
dependent upon your soils, condition of soils (moisture, rock picking, etc.);
in my silt loams I would broadcast the grass seed first and then drill the oats to get a bit of seed to soil contact with the grass seed.
the drill you will be using does not plant both grass seed and small grains?
I do both with a cultipacker hitched to the drill, one pass.
Decades doing the same thing, works for me.

When I was a kid we had a IH endgate seeder, grass seed went in a small hopper on the back of the big oat hopper, sow them both at the same time and drag them in. Few years later got a new JD drill and did both at same time. By grass seed I meant alfalfa I think a little brome grass went in the hopper with the oats.

You can direct drill grass seed without cover crop and get 2-3 cuttings first yr unless you want the oats.

We ended up broadcasting the grass seed and drilling the oats over the top should be OK thanks for the comments

It depends on what you call grass. When ever I needed to seed a plot for hog pasture I would put oats in the drill hopper and add a pasture mix of seeds on top of the oats. The grain drill did the rest. The pasture seed mix I would buy, from our feed store, was called horse pasture mix. It had quite a verity of seed in it, blue grass, brome grass, orchard grass, alsike glover, mammoth red clover, few verities of fescue, and others I can't remember. This mix also could be cut as a forage.
