My timing gear went out on this tractor and I need to remove the front cover to repair it. How do I get the belt pulley off without breaking it? And is there a special tool I need?

First remove the large nut at the center of the pulley; it's 2-1/2" hex.

With the nut off the pulley will usually then slide right off (the several I've had apart all have....) However if it does not you will need to use a puller on it.

Good luck!

Is this center piece part of the nut? Or how does it come off? Is it right or left hand thread?

Looks like an aftermarket pulley for power steering has been mounted in front of the stock fan belt pulley. My guess it that it replaces the stock crankshaft nut.

Incidentally the crankshaft nut is standard, right-hand threaded.

Now that you have the pin removed that holds the extra pulley on the front it should separate from the main pulley. It had a flange that fits over the outside if the main pulley that is probably rusted on. You will need to be careful when removing it because that flange is pretty thin and that is what located the front pulley on the original one.

Once the extra pulley is removed you will be able to access the nut on the crankshaft.
