I have a 1926 engine which I was rebuilding outside, had the oil pan off and I notice today after the oil pans back on is there is sand and dirt in the engine, not much but just enough to make me unsure if I want to start it having done a rebuild. I was going to was it out with gas , but was wondering if there is any seal in the motor ill damage or in the oil pump?

thanks

any grit going through brgs. is pure damage. gonna be tricky as grit will wash back into brgs. when washing it.

I would pick a Saturday with nothing going on, pull it apart, wash it with diesel, and put it completely together in that day. I mean pull it down to bare bones. You will likely need a new seal kit (or maybe just a few) but you have to get all of that all out of there. When I rebuild an engine I always run it for an hour and change the oil, then five hours and change it again. I wouldn't even bother firing that up like it is. You have done it once and have the right parts. It will take you an hour to tear it down, a couple to clean it WELL, and then three or so to get it far enough that it is sealed. I don't care if you only run it five minutes with that in there and dump the oil, you will have things damaged that waste your money. You may not ever "use" the tractor, but someone else might and it may not last like it should.

Would you take it to the field and work it all day with no air cleaner? This is worse because it sounds like it is in the bottom end, too.

The 10-20 engine is splash lube on the connecting rods and oil feed through the oil pump to the roller main bearings. Drop the pan and clean it, spotlessly clean. Make sure the oil pump pickup is spotless. Flush the roller bearings while you have the pan off. Seals are felt on the main seals. They were designed more to keep the dirt out than the oil in. I have yet to meet an F series tractor that didn't ultimately mark it's territory.

If the dust blew in while you had the pan off, as state before, take the pan off and clean. While it is off, flush the whole lower end and mains with clean diesel or kerosene. You should be fine.
