Replacing lead packing. Farmall 300 carb

Any tips or tricks to get this old packing out? Seems to be stuck solid. I tried tapping a flathead screwdriver in there and turning it out. No luck as of yet.

Thanks, Ryan

Find a long screw and screw it into it. Then use vise grips and pull it out. That is how I have done it in the past

It is NOT lead. It is graphite impregnated cotton. Take a small screwdriver and dig it out. It will come out in crumbs.

Be very careful with the new packing, it is fragile.

Any tips on putting new one in? Like how tight to tighten fitting before putting screw back in. I just don't want to screw up.
Thanks again.

I install the packing. I have the nut all the way on the needle. The insert the needle into the packing and run the nut down until it start to thread in. Once the nut starts in its threads back the screw out a couple turn and then tighten the nut until there is some resistance to turning the screw. It does not need to be so tight that you need a screw driver to turn it. Once installed if it does seep a bit just tighten the nut a bit more.
