SC Fan/WP Pulley

Tonight I started the SC up for the first time this year. After starting with the charger I left it to run continuing to charge and I walked off to do other things. After about 20 minutes or so I noticed some smoke. Investigating further I saw it was coming from the back of the rear (generator) pulley on the fan/water pump/generator pulley assembly. Ok, so I know I have a shot pulley bearing(s). Looking online at an IH parts website I see the spindle/hub assembly/thrust nut (w/ oil tube) as 2 different parts. I checked Steiners and they show selling an entire assembly that includes everything excluding the fan itself. I'd appreciate thoughts on which way to go - IH pulley's only or Steiners with the whole works? I'm also assuming either way that I'll have to pull the radiator to make the fix? Thanks in advance for responses.

I think that you will find that the individual parts are not available from a dealer anymore, haven't been for at least 30 years. The replacement part number from a dealer will be 131486C91. Lists for about $385.

Looks like modern view readers will have to switch to the classic mode to read the original posting. here is a copy of what was asked.

Thanks Owen. The Steiner assembly is priced at around $145. This tractor sees relatively few hrs/yr so I'll probably purchase the assembly from Steiner.

I am not sure what part you mean, but if it is the fan pulley yes you can change the fan without removing the radiator. Just know the rear facing head of the bolt doesn t turn,it is captured by the slide bracket.

That reminds me, Haven't put any oil in mine in a year. Buy one with a sealed bearing, doubt if you can get any parts for the old one any more.

I am now. I found the procedure online. When I looked for the screw I couldn't find it at first. Then I found the hole (minus screw) caked over with dirt. I haven't thoroughly cleaned the hole and threads but I did read the screw is machine thread. Looking at the hole it appears to be perhaps 1/4" screw? Hopefully after I get the hub lubed I'll be set without needing to replace it. As it sits now I can't detect any wobble or play in the pulleys.

If you can't see any wobble just clean it out,oil it and use it for a while. If it leaks out real fast, then replace it with an assembly. I have several SC, and two 230's only one has been replaced with an assembly. You will need a fine thread screw I think. Make a small gasket for the screw.
