IH Farmall 756 Gas tractor

Was the 756 IH any good. Have one coming up on a farm sale soon. Has a older farmhand 8' bucket and 18.4-34 tires @ 65% with weights. 6154 hours adn 1000/540 pto. it's a non cab unit with no 3 point. Tin looks straight but was an outside tractor so the paint is faded. Just wondering what this may be worth in central ND and also if this tractor was any good or has known failure points I should look for at the sale.

who knows, the owner has passed away and now the are having a estate sale. as is condition. I would assume no. and this auctionieer is known to power wash the tractors and such down before hand so it's hard to tell if your buying a leaky tractor.

I have had a 756 row crop gas for about 7 years. I use it for mowing with a 14' bush hog. I really like the c291 engine. It has the hydraulic seat that I really enjoy. Some will say that they are thirsty, but mine does fine for me and it always starts. Best to use a higher octane gas and low ash oils in those engines. Check the TA to be sure it works in low and check the wide front to be sure the tie rod ends and spindle tops are in good shape. If I had it to do over I would buy the same tractor again. I paid $5,150 for mine back then. --Lee

With that many hours you can pretty much count on the engine being overhauled at least once. It may or may not be ready for work again, but you pays your money and you takes your chances.

Before you buy, start it and put it in reverse and see if it makes a clunking sound if so its a 4000$ repair bill.

My neighbor has one and had it overhauled because the engine was very tired. I'm pretty sure he told me it was like a car engine in that it didn't have any sleeves. They bored it and sleeved it back to standard.

The C291 engine rebuild kits that I see offered online all come with sleeves. Could be the a C291 combine engines were without sleeves? I don't know.

My main concerns would be the transmission, clutch, torque, steering system and condition of the front axle. High hours on a tractor with a front end loader that's the things that will take a beating.

I agree, all the C291's I've heard about were dry sleeve engines. The C301 in 806/856 were sleeveless, as well as the C200 used in the 544.

Ah NO the C291 has sleeves , the C301 does not have sleeves. and that one you bore out and install larger pistons up to .060 then once that is wore out ya do a light bore and install a REPAIR sleeve and start all over again from Std.

What does the hy-tran look like? If you buy it you will want to change it or at least I would. Good thing about 756 is little chance of drive train problems IF NOBODY DROPPED THE PARK LEVER WHILE MOVING. As someone else said drive it in reverse and listen for tick tick tick or clunk clunk clunk.

Just to let you all know the results of the auction. None of the tractors were started so no way to hear if the tractor ticked or made noise when backing up. 756 went for 3 grand. Hydraulics on the pto powered loader will need to be repaired but besides a few leaks and some reduced flow hoses causing slow loader action it's a pretty nice unit. Took me awhile to find the parking lever. john deere's do not have one of those.
