I got this ol W-9 out at Newton,KS from Two Fat Brothers Salvage last year.Don Livingston sold me a new manifold and Ive finally got around to making it run good again.Ive figured out its a 1951,but do any of You Guys on here happen to know what some of the letter designations stand for in the serial number? Thought it might be interesting .Thanks, It is Serial WCB58050WL2B

Starting letters identify the tractor as a W9 tractor. Suffix letters W1 = gasoline engine. Think that should be a 1 instead of a L. Think 2b is for a faster reverse than standard.

Thanks D Slater,I figured part of it designated a gasoline engine, but the high speed reverse is kinda interesting, and a bit odd.I wonder what use that might have been for on a tractor designed to drag heavy things forward.LOL! It has a full M&W Hydraulic setup with 1 full set of remotes at the back, and an orbital motor put in under the steering wheel with hydraulic cylinder on the steering arm(drives like a 4020) She's an interesting ol girl.

RoboFarmer, not positive about the last part. Sometimes a B indicates a engine that was equipped with 5,000 foot pistons. But with a 2 in front of the B the only thing I come up with is the high speed reverse. Only thing with a reverse speed change in those transmissions the first or second speed would also be changed. In other IH tractors with high speed first and reverse its a first speed gear change. Have you drove the tractor or drove another to compare speeds? Other IH tractors with a high speed first and reverse really only have a slight change over the regular gear set.

John, think you are correct. Simple when you pointed it out. Think W12B = rubber tires, swinging drawbar and starting or lighting.

Well,It has all those things on it.It seems like its geared slower than the 49 model I used to have.It would step right out as fast as an M,but this one seems geared slower, but maybe thats just me.

My W9 has serial number WCB53051W12B. If I remember correctly when I looked it up it is a 1951 model year also. A bit older than yours, 4999 difference in the numbers.

Yes,I knew mine was late in 1951 because the casting date on the rear end is from October. The engine block is the earliest piece, then the tranny was produced in August

Its just a different looking pump mounted right where a live pump would be on a Super M,400,or 450.Its a better pump in my opinion. It and the one on my 42 M both have more pressure than the IH ones I own. See,This tractor never came with any hydraulics at all originally from IH,Not even a belly pump

Are you sure? I think they started coming with hydraulics in 50 or 51. It was a live setup right from the start. It is shown in the parts manual.

No,It wasnt standard equipment to my knowledge. My other W-9 doesnt have hydraulics. No way to prove it,but Id guess its an add-on,especially being an M&W setup
