Just painted these rims off my 52 H and I've only seen one other pair like them. They're stamped and are factory and the casting codes say that they were made in 42. I really like the style but what I want to know is why they quit making them[/img]

I agree with rusticredacres, they are cut-down steel wheels. The time period is about right for WW II tire shortages and tractors going back to steel wheels.

I have one of those style front wheels as well,
always wondered why I hadn't seen more of
them. Guess I didn't realize that if those are cut
off steel wheels, as stated, that they used those
heavy cast centers?

If you wanted to buy a new H or M in'42 you generally had to wait several weeks to get one. Getting a steel wheeled one was faster because of the rubber shortage. As mentioned, when the rubber shortage ended most farmers preferred rubber tires to steel so had the local blacksmith convert them to rubber. My Grandpa said he was able to get a new 1942 rubber tired H rather quickly because he ordered it with a hydraulic loader and a 2 bottom plow. That was enough incentive for the dealer to move Grandpa up on the waiting list. --Lee
