Farmall M unknowen pto unit

Alright I need help. I recentley bought a 48 farmall m from the orignal owners son. It had sat almost 20 yearst (long story short) I got it running an noticed the pto unit instead of having the standard 2bolts it has 8 an it is a much bigger an heavyier unit. It looks alot like the pto unit on a mta but Is not an m-ta... all of my research I cannot find any info on this. Any info will help. Thanks

Can you post a picture? Short of a picture, then we are all guessing.

My guess would be SMTA or more likely a 400 rearend (with factory TA delete) transplanted.

Is the PTO live or not? (Does the PTO stop when you push foot clutch in)?

Record each gears mph speed at WOT. While this will not directly answer your PTO question it will give you a clue as to whether or not your rearend is orginal to a 1948 m. You can do this with a modern GPS or alternatively measure the distance between 2 known points like fenceposts or trees and then use a stopwatch to see how much time in seconds it takes to cover the known distance between the two points (try to have at least 100 feet but anything closer to 200 feet or more is better as your travel zone. No need to hit an exact number either. The longer you make your 2 points then the the less error you will have in your calculations but it does take more effort to measure longer distances out with a tape measure too. Finally do some math to convert your recordings to to mph. Once you know each gears mph speed at WOT then you can then look at speed charts to determine if you have standard M gears or (Super M, Super MTA gears, or 400 gears). For example a regular m will do like 5.2 mph in 4th gear where a super or 400 will be like 6.6 mph in 4th gear both at WOT and with stock size tires of course.

Try looking at the casting codes on the rearend. Deciphering the casting codes can determine year and model.

Ill get a pic of it when it gets light out. It dose not have live
pto but looks simlar to the live pto unit nbut reareend has
a different bolt patern than an m-ta or a 400 that was the
first thing i checked an all the gears are the same speed as
my other m an my farmall h

Well not too much it has the orignal rearend. The time lines dont match up to be the rearend off of an m-ta because it has the break bands not the disc brakes an it has the crooked gear shift with orignal cap seals in the shifter pivot pin. Also I took a close look an the bolt pattern is a little different than an m-ta or that of a 400
