Farmall M fan belt length?

I replaced the belt on my M about 10
years ago, got it from the IH dealer.
It was loose when I put it on, but never
affected the cooling. I did arrow the
pulley up so it gripped. I noticed a
couple days ago after rebuilding the
head and getting it running that it
would only turn the fan very slow. My
question is can you get a shorter belt?
I haven't taken it off yet to measure it
to see if it's the stock belt.

I imagine you have tried adjusting the upper pulley on the same shaft as the fan? If you have make sure the adjuster screw didn't come loose. Otherwise I was able to buy a new fan belt through NAPA last summer. Made a huge difference.

The driven pulley, is also a adjustable sheave,If you close that sheave[make it smaller] i think your old belt will be the right length.

Didn't mean to insult you Bob,apparently, your belt has the shoulder's wore off, or the sheaves are worn, it would be interesting to measure your belt width, to a new one.

I took the fan belt off tonight and it measured almost 50 inches. I knew that was longer than what is listed. I checked what the length was in the parts store at ytmag and the length is 45 7/8. It worked all these years never got hot even baling hay When it was in the 90's. The only time it got hot was when the radiator had a hole in it and my son got it hot.
