656 Fuel gauge erratic operation

The fuel gauge in my 656 has started acting up. It will bounce between empty and the fuel level it should be showing, and will do this every few seconds. Is there a way to tell if this is a problem with the sending unit or with the gauge?

You just gave the answer. I would bet 90% it is the sender. First thing is to make sure you have a GOOD ground to the fuel tank. Hook a ground wire to the sender itself and see if that fixes it. Still think the little tiny wire wrap in the sender is broken. You can test the gauge. Un hook the wire up on the tank and see what the gauge shows. Full or empty. Use you trouble light and ground the clip end and hook the pointy probe to the gauge sender wire. Check the gauge now and it should give some kind of reading. Tractors bounce SOOO much more that a car that the wiper in the sender just wears out. Hope this helps cause the sender is a very low OHMage device. Jeffcat
