Mott flail mower for Super A

I have been looking for a flail mower for my Super A. The Mott flails for a Cub are more easily found of course. Are they are the same model but just different mounting hardware? If they are the same mower then what would I need to mount one to my tractor?

The ones made for a cub will not work on a Super A due the the fact the PTO's on the 2 tractor spin different directions

just twist the drive belt

Twisting the belt won't fix the fact that the Cub pto spins 3 times the speed of the Super A.

I have never seen a Flail for a Super A, so I cannot say if they are the smae, but considering the higher horsepower of the A I would suspect the mower for the A to be wider. They did make a 5 foot Mott that was sold for cubs, but it was an extreme load for them in anything but very easy cutting. As has been mentioned, pto rotation is different, but that is easy to solve. The belt makes a half twist with the side coming from the outside pulley going on top of the mower pulley, for an A just put the inside belt on top. The rpm difference will be a bigger challenge. The Mott runs about 2,000 rpm at full throttle on a cub which is where it cuts best. To get the same rpm from a Super A you will need quite a bit bigger pulley on the SA. according to my figures it would take approximately a 26 inch pto pulley to give the same mower rpm unless you used a smaller pulley on the mower, which would give it more of a tendency for the belt to slip. The bigger flails I have seen had a larger diameter, and since the cutting was done by the inches per second the ends of the knives travel, the same as a lawnmower blade, they could be spun slower. How is that for muddying the water?

Good info John. I saw an ad on Craig's List for a Super A that had a flail mower on it but it was located all the way up in Michigan so I didn't even see if they would sell it separately. That's what led me to believe that Mott made one for the Super A.

Mott made one for the Super A. The main mower unit was the same. The lift parts, rear mounting brackets, and idler pulley brackets were different. It probably ran off the belt pulley shaft rather than the PTO as the pulley shaft on a Super A runs much faster than the PTO. It isn't likely to be worthwhile to fab up all the parts required to move a mower from one tractor to the other.

Of course thats why you drive it off the belt pulley
