Video of Front Wheels on 340.

l had posted about a problem I have with the steering on my 340. I the video you'll first see the left wheel move while I move the steering wheel. When I switch to right wheel you'll see that it moves a lot more than the left wheel. I'm moving the steering wheel the same amount for both sides. I'm beginning to think that there is a broken tooth on one of the gears in the steering gear box. Any ideas from any of you?

Well, you could look and see if there is any undue slop anywhere in the visible linkages, or if the arm is slipping on the shaft at the steering box.

The left and right steering output arms mesh against one another inside the steering box:

If it's not external the only way you're ever going to figure out what's wrong is to take it apart and look inside. I know it's not the easy popular option, but it's probably the only option if you don't have X-ray vision...

If I had x-ray vision I wouldn't waste it on this tractor. I'd go over to the collage campus and use it there.

I think it is something in the gear box. I'm going to have to live with it for now. I don't feel up to tearing it apart just now.

You have clearly stated there is no slop in the linkage or splines on the outside. The reality is a tooth broken off of the left side gear inside the Box. Jim

I'm sure that is the problem. I wonder how long this gear box will last?

The issue might be more financial. If working the tractor near a car or solid wall, the steering might just jam and cause real damage. Jim

That is a good point, but this tractor will be used around my farm stead. I use it for clearing snow, and hauling wood and coal to the house during the winter. I do have a few landscaping jobs I'd like to do around here too. I guess the worse case scenario I see is if the steering gear falls apart in the middle of one of these projects. Then I'll have to deal with it. Hopefully it won't be in the middle of the winter. I was just wondering if I should start hunting up a replacement now, or could it wait?

Yhose components are Not made. A very good machine shop could weld it up machine and form a new tooth. Then re heat treat the gear. Used boxes will take time to find. Start now. Bates Equipment in Indiana and salvage yards are best starting point. Jim

I looked on Bates site for the gear box. All I can say is, YIKS! better start scouring the countryside for the parts I need. Maybe I should take my tractor apart and start selling the parts. Then I could afford a newer/better tractor.
