What Is The Recommended Coolant For Farmall H?

Well, since ethylene glycol (the green stuff) didn't exist or was very expensive when the H was in production, PLAIN WATER is the "recommended" coolant. You would drain the block and radiator daily in freezing conditions.

Nowadays, plain old regular green antifreeze, or your favorite compatible environmentally-friendly brand, mixed to suit your environment, up to 50/50, is fine.

I remember putting nonpermanent antifreeze in the
'51 M every fall when we mounted the picker. It was
a clear blue color, just like today's windshield
washer fluid, but since it was mostly alcohol it
would evaporate out, therefore not permanent.

If you do the math you will find that the 50/50 mix in the long run cost you at least 1/3 more then the straight stuff does

I have switched to the universal antifreeze since I have some newer stuff and not sure if it is the new or old type so that way I have both covered. That way I only need one type on hand. Depending on where you are depends on the mix you want. If up north you may want 70/30 70% antifreeze and 30 water. If your where it does not get way below zero 50/50 is ok

I agree with not buying the premixed antifreeze. I do buy distilled water for mixing with antifreeze and topping off wet cell batteries, it's only about $1/gallon in grocery stores.

I was a coolant engineer for a major HD diesel
engine/tractor OEM. The best coolant for your
tractor is a traditional type coolant. This would
have additives to protect your system far superior
to what was available when the tractor was new.
And also it won't cause harm to the system. Most
newer extended life coolants that claim 5+ years
of service should be avoided in these systems.
The seals and gaskets are not compatible and leaks
will occur.

As for pre-mix vs concentrate. Personally, I like
concentrate for many of the cost reasons listed
here. I also like the ability to adjust my freeze
point by adding more if i cannot get all the water
out of a system after a flush.

Pre-mix coolants were intended as a convenience
and as a benefit to cooling system life. Many
users wouldn't spend the $0.50/gallon to buy
distilled water to mix with the concentrate. They
would use well water or whatever was readily
available. This caused service issues typically
resulting in warranty claims and unhappy
customers.
