New regulator for Farmall C

I have a few questions about replacing the regulator on a C. The first two pics are the old in original position. The next two are the new one. The three terminals from left are labeled "L" "BAT" "F". There is also one underneath on the back side.

#1: To which terminal do I connect my black wire?
#2: Do I need to use what's in the last pic?

I'm pretty sure the larger wire coming from the battery goes to the center terminal. Then to polarize, I jump the "L" and "BAT" terminals.

Tractor is 6 V POS ground.

Thanks for any help...

Your original gen has three brushes and the gen looks like its still original Delco either a 1101355 or a 1101423 is your new reg made for that gen. Your batt wire will go to the batt terminal on the reg. Field to field and arm to gen. Your new reg has a coil thats mounted to the field on the reg and your old field wire going to the control will not be usd there should be instructions with the new reg. Just use an OHM meter to make sure reg is grounded to the gen and the gen has ground to the frame. Remember Pos ground on the battery and polarize gen when done. Did your new reg come from a good dealer and not from a farm supply outfit. I have used those regs on gens like you have and they have worked for many yrs. Your hi charge now will not be in the system as you dont use that wire which was the one going from the field on the gen to the control.

The first image is of a cutout relay, not a regulator. If it was original to the generator (probable) the generator will be a three brush style. The use of the real regulator (other pics) is just fine. The wires will go as follows: the L terminal goes to the light switch fuse connection it should be 10 gauge wire. From the Bat terminal, a 10 ga. wire goes to the load side of the amp meter (side not connected to the start switch)
From the F terminal a wire should be connected to the Field terminal on the gen (12 gauge works). From the Arm terminal a 10 gauge wire connects to the terminal under the base (GEN or ARM) is usual label.
The third brush (in the gen) will be adjustable.
It should be adjusted pretty much as far as it can move toward the fixed brush.
Polarization of the generator is done by touching the Bat terminal to the GEN terminal for one second with a solid copper wire (12 gauge house solid will work). It will spark a bit, not dangerous. Jim

Unless you are completely rewiring the tractor you do not use the L terminal. With the cutout you showed in the first picture, the lights, etc. get their power from a lead running from the ammeter to the light switch. You also will need to disconnect the original wire that went from the F of the generator to the light switch. That lead was to control the charge rate, which will now be controlled by the FLD terminal of the regulator. Your wiring would be L of regulator not used, BAT of regulator to the battery lead. F of regulator to F of generator. A of generator to the lead on the bottom of the regulator. To polarize jump from the BAT or L terminal to A terminal. The BAT and L terminal are connected inside the regulator via a coil to better control charge rate.
