Rebuilding a 1926 10-20

I am rebuilding a 1926 10-20 and the rear end is locked up. I pulled off the cover and the gears are badly rusted. BUT... I have a 1930 10-20 parts tractor. The tranny and final drive gears in it are in pristine condition, it will be a simple matter to install them in the '26 10-20.

Here is what the '30 gears look like.

looks great , i bet your having lots of fun , are they new steering arm balls , did you make them ar buy them

Nope, that is the original 86 year old steering arm ball. It is in really good condition, I just cleaned it up with a wire wheel.

you are lucky they are in good order, isearched for ages to find something to fit my WD40 but in the end i purchased a small lathe and made my own , and that is a tale on its own :D

I worked on the engine some today. I made a tool for installing the flywheel, installed the flywheel and then started cleaning up sleeves and pistons.

I took an extra flywheel nut and turned it down on my lathe so the OD is slightly smaller than the hole in the center of the flywheel. I welded it to a piece of pipe, basically just to act as a guide.

Here it is in action.

Where did you put all the dirt that came from around the engine tub ???
That alone would have worn me out !!!
That is one heck of a lot of work, definitely one to be proud of.

Thought I would drag up this old thread. This project got shelved for over a year when I sent the manifold away to be repaired. After getting it back several months ago I had a different project in the shop and did not get back to the 10-20 until this week. I did a few things to it like mount the manifold and aircleaner. The carb has been bead blasted clean and I have the new parts to complete the rebuilding of it. The replacement fuel tank is sitting filled with an acid solution to remove the rust. I hope to have it running soon!

I borrowed a long flat belt and belted the Regular up to it today. I just let the Regular turn over the 10-20 engine for several minutes to help wear it in. Then I turned on the fuel and the mag and pretty soon it fired off and ran!! I let it run for a while and ran the throttle up and down and made some minor adjustments to the carb settings. I then drove it around a little bit and it ran GREAT! Then all of a sudden it started running on only 2 cylinders  an investigation revealed that the mag was acting up.... I took it off and spent all afternoon working on it, trying different coils, condensers and distributor caps.... nothing worked..... The magneto is a Splitdorf which is "correct" for this early of a 10-20, but since I can't get it working at the moment, I will just mount an IHC E4A mag on it for now so it will run. I did take several movies of the tractor running before it started running bad, but I guess I was too close to the tractor while filming and the sharp exhaust note made some nasty static on the sound recording.....

Here are some pictures!

I put an E4A mag on it and now it runs MUCH better! I spent today fixing the leaking radiator. It has the original round tube core and when I took it apart 2 years ago to clean it up and put it back together I could have sworn it did not leak then.... I found 2 tubes were leaking so I just soldered the ends shut, NOW it does not leak! There are 3-4 very minor things yet to do, but otherwise it is all done!! I will post a couple videos later when I can get to the library to upload them.

CONGRADULATIONS !!! When you started this one I seriously didn't think it was going to make it. Good job ..a LOT of hard work.

You, sir, are a Tractor Expert. Congratulations. That must have been very gratifying to hear the ole gal fire up. Nicely done.

I like it nice to see it running again lots of work but its a good feeling when done and driving around, waiting to see the video.
