I have a 56 300 utility and I have about 5 or 6 inches of play in the steering wheel! What is the best way to correct this problem? Also if I go too fast down the road my right front wheel starts to shimmy and I have to put my foot against the tie rod to stop it!!! Any help would be great, thanks OLDSTONER!

Well I don't see anyone else chipping in, so I'll try. I really have no idea, except how I fixed my Farmall. And I couldn't find picture of a 300-U. If it has mechanical steering [ no power steering ] you might jack the front end up an inch, play with the steering wheel and determine where the slop is. Might have to remove the hood too. If the slop is inside the steering box, start taking things aaprt, you might find worm gears / sector gears / bushings worn badly. In that case, I found it is simple to just replace them. I tried all sorts of tricks, but nothing stayed, until I replaced worm gear.
Best of luck.

Thanks FBH44 I will try like you said and see what I find. Hope I can find what ever parts I end up needing! OLDSTONER!

Send me your personal e-mail and I will try to e-mail you a copy of 300 U Steering and front axle assembly service manual. My e-mail is open, you might also send phone #.

If putting your foot against the tie rod (drag link) helps, then you probably have wear in your steering gearbox output shafts. I had mine welded up and ground to size, and new bushings and seals in the gearbox. You could also have wallowed out tapers in your steering arms or spindle arms, or bad spindle bearings, but I don't think any of those would be helped by a foot on the drag link.

Unfortunately those parts are not available except from boneyards, and due to the popularity of the 300U/350U and the weakness of the steering gearbox, they are real hard to find even there. Fortunately, machine shops can build up worn shafts and re-bush the case pretty readily.
