Farmall an and hitachi alternator help

Hey guys, I have mounted a remanned hitachi 13421
alternator on my h. The previous alternator was a one wire
alternator and I am wondering if that is all I will need for the
new one? Or is there any other wires i may need to run? I am
also wondering if someone could tell me where to run the
wires when putting a new amp gauge in? The previous owner
did not have one in so I have no old wiring to go off.

Much thanks,
Cole

A simple search would have provided all this same info, but if you have not figured it out by now then you want to wire it up as a 3 wire.

Just a thought, I like a volt meter instead of an Amp meter. As soon as you turn the switch on you can see the condition of the battery. When cranking you can see if the voltage is dropping because of starter drag or poor battery condition. And you can tell if the alternator is putting out as it should. IMO

That is a 3 wire alternator, run a wire from your ignition with a diode in it to excite the alternator.

Personally, I would stick with the amp gauge, but if you have not already purchased your new amp gauge yet then some of the vendors do offer one with an increased amp scale that is better suited for the increased charge output that your new alternator is capable of on a really low battery.

The stock IH gauge is lower scale and it can peg for a bit on a really low battery, but it does not hurt it any. I kept the same factory IH amp gauges on both an h as well as a m because they still worked on my tractor but if I ever need to replace them for any reason then I would go with the one with the increased scale.
