Farmall Super M alternator bulge

My neighbor has his father's Super M. Sometime in the past it was converted to 12v with an alternator. I don't know why a hood bulge was necessary in an M Farmall, but the result is different than I have ever seen elsewhere. Do you suppose that this was a kit to extend the hood outward?

Never seen it done that way. Someone went to a lot of needless trouble because an alternator will fit under the hood of an M just fine. No sheet metal alterations necessary.

That looks neat enough. Maybe he worked at a body shop. I put an alternator on my Father in laws Farmall H in about 1980. I got it tucked in under the hood. Probably didn't take as much work as it did to do that.

My M was converted when I bought it. They got it close enough so as to not need to cut the hood, but neither would the hood fasten down completely. Took me about 1 hour to modify the mounting bracket and make that alternator fit completely under the hood.

Well that is much better than most hack jobs that I see on Farmall sheet metal when a large Delco alternator is added, but it still is a hack job on the sheet metal that was really unnecessary even though the craftsmenship is better than most.

At this point I probably would not change it since it is so unique, tells a story, likely been that way for decades, and possibly being a family heirloom...

If they had simply unbolted that stock generator bracket and flipped it so it raised the alternator and then went from there....
