Post hole diggers

I purchased a used post hole digger and only by chance found the driveline for it. Well, the driveline for it is a bit old and used up and could possibly use a tiny bit of grease....but that is not the big problem with it. The spline side on the driveshaft for the PTO is fine and will be better with grease, but the other end with the keyway is kinda destroyed. Split on the key way setscrew. The driveline is 1 inch square...and the drive end is 1 inch round with keyway. The universal joint has 7/8 inch caps. Any options available for getting a universal joint and the end drive would be useful. I dont know if I can change the driveshaft into the gearbox or not. I have not delved into it that much. I think of that as an option as well as round shimming the gearbox driveshaft round and extending the keyway outward. Prefer to find a 1 inch pipe/u-joint like it used to have on it. I can send pics later if that would help.

Around here in western Wisc you can buy universal
joint parts at most farm stores and tractor supply
stores. The trick is to make sure the ones they
have match yours. I had a PTO shaft that I tried
to rebuild, but all the popular sizes didn't fit.
They usually have splined and keyed parts in
various sizes. Good luck.

Most any farm and home place has PTO parts like what your looking for. I have used those parts to build a good many broken drive shafts over the years

Went to my 2 local dealerships...and one local offshoot and no dice. Going up to visit family in a couple weeks. They may have someone there that can help with the parts. It is a farming community. I think the main issue is going to be the 1 inch pipe with keyway to fit the gearbox 1 inch drive with halfmoon keyway. They did mention a local driveline company and if not them a company a bit farther away. I am not in a hurry for it so will wait a couple of weeks. I shall post the pic here when I get it adapted for usage.

My local Orscheln's has an area about 4X8 covered in PTO parts including the 1 inch keyed yoke like your needing

Sounds like a very simple job for a machine shop if you have one locally. I just may be lucky but we have one in town that likes my little farm implement type jobs for fill in tasks while waiting for parts and material for their big money making jobs. I had a couple of shafts made which included cutting a slot for a woodruff key (the half moon thing) noted by someone in this thread. I think the cost for a couple of different custom made drive shafts which included left handed threaded bolt holes was $40 for the pair, Hal.

My brother has a vertical mill to cut keyways.
Instead of cutting woodruff style, he just uses an end mill cutter to make a plain keyway in the shaft, which takes a straight keystock. Much easier than setting up for woodruff. Holds just as well.

My dad has a milling machine too. That is who I am going up to visit. I think there is a better opportunity to find the parts there too. My area has become a bit more select in what they have at some shops. The pic shows what my problem is. 1 inch square drive main shaft and 1 inch round drive connection.
