Farmall M Transmission

I am working with a student to replace some gears in his transmission on an M. I am taking off the transmission driving shaft coupling that is keyed. I have a pic to go with it. Any suggestions on how to remove it. I am struggling to get leverage on it to get it off. Thanks in advance.

If going to replace transmission gears you just as well remove the 6 bolts in the housing and pull the complete input shaft out. Then you can use a puller or a plate with holes in it across the flange with a spacer in the middle and some bolts through holes. Unless long threads you will have to space more than once. That's if you don't have a better way to remove. Can't drive the shaft down after its out because of the key contacting the front bearing. Can't replace any transmission gears without the input shaft coming out.

Some I have had apart just slid off, some took a lot of misery and aggravation to remove. You can take out the bolts whose heads are showing in your photo and the whole front carrier and input shaft gear assembly will come off the tractor. I assume you'll have to remove this anyway to replace any gears. Once it is out you can drive the shaft out of the coupling by supporting the coupling ears and leaving the rest of the unit hanging. This would be best done over a padded surface or with only an inch or two for the unit to drop when it comes loose.

Try this:

Find a socket with a diameter a bit smaller than the input shaft OD. (I recall using a 1-1/4" socket but it's been a while...)

Center the socket on the shaft, then position the clutch shaft driver coupling over the socket, trapping the socket between the coupling halves. Use suitable bolts and nuts thru the ears on both coupling halves, then gradually and evenly tighten the nuts. This will squeeze the coupling halves together and pull the transmission coupling half from the shaft.

That design is my criticism of IHC, all the horsepower and torque driven through a little keyway. The key deforms, and it jams in there.
I had to rig up a pusher; I installed a big bolt in the middle bolt hole, and installed two other bolts in the outside holes, and riggied up a plate of steel scross the middle, with two holes lined up with the outside holes. If you follow what I mean. THen I cranked and cranked and cranked, i lsdowly pushed the plate of steel away, and I honestly think for many hours, til that thing popped off.

By removing the 6 bolts, you will not pull the whole top shaft out, just the constant mesh gear assembly. Im not 100% sure, but I don't think the top shaft will come through the front hole, youll have to reove the 3 bolts holding the rear of the shaft and bearing as well, could be wrong. My glasses are at work, but you did get the retainer ring off didn't you.
