Farmall engine rebuild

Not quite sure of the model yet. Sorry but I do know that it is a 1953 tricycle style tractor. The engine has tons of blow-by. you have to stop consistently to clean plugs. My guys here at work are telling me its not worth the money to rebuild the engine. Economy wise its the cheapest route for me to take. Is there anything in the mean time that I can do to help some of the spark plug fouling until I can get a kit to rebuild. It runs great just kills you to drive from all the smoke. I can do the work myself. So any advice would be greatly headed. :D :D

Is your smoke from running rich or burning oil? If its running rich a carb rebuild it pretty cheap. Burning oil in a lot more expensive. In either case using a hotter spark plug will help unless you are already running a hotter plug. The plugs listed in manuals when the tractor was made aren't hot enough for todays gas. You can also check compression to see if its an engine problem. If you have to rebuild the engine and can do it your self it will be a lot cheaper than buying something newer. Rebuilding those old engines isn't complicated if you have some tools and a little mechanical ability. You can get manuals with lots of information. Chances are real good if you take it apart it will need a valve job and at least rings. Other stuff such as sleaves, depends on the amount of wear.

You could try dumping a can of some "overhaul in a bottle" product into the engine oil. It might help some for a while.

Your buddies at work are right. It is not economical to rebuild the engine. That's not the point, though. It's even LESS economical to buy another tractor that might have the same exact problem, and even LESS-LESS economical to buy a new tractor for what you're doing with this one.

Put some effort into identifying this tractor.

After you get it overhauled, make sure you use some high zinc oil,In It! Dont take my word for it,do your own research on the zinc content of the newer oils ! The zinc, in the oil, is what gives it the extreme pressure rating, necessary for the older flat tappet engines !!

This might work for slugs , won't help the smoke.

Available at your FLAPS.

Go to NAPA and buy anti-foulers. You will have to find the
oldest guy in there to ask - kids don't know they exist. I have a
few sets in a drawer around here. They work like a charm -
even on a skeeter fogger.

Thank you for all your help guys. Apparently I didn't get the SN# like I though just the engine cast number witch is 6695-DF. From I've found on this site is that is a H block assuming its possibly a "H" model farmall. There is a number stamped under the firing order as well if yall can help me with possibly understanding it: 8-10-R. Thanks for all you're help again.

Farmaller it isn't my tractor it is my father-in-laws. Im just now digging into this. My first tractor as well never had to work on it until now. But thanks for your overwhelming advice and help. Hope you have a nice day.

The 8-10-R is the casting code for the block. Meaning the block was casted on August 10th 1948. The 6695-DF is the part number for the Farmall H's C152 block. So your tractor is a 1948 Farmall H.

What is your opinion on the best spark plug brand and "hotness" to use in this tractor? Right now we are running an autolite 3116. Good or bad?
