Farmall H Axle bearings

What is the easiest way to remove and install inner axle brgs. On an H ? Take off top cover? Or go through Pto unit? Drained rear housing and found a cracked ball from a brg. Do you think it's from the axle or bull pinion? Thanks , DTK.

I think can do it without removing the top, the bull gear would be between you and the bearing but you could unbolt the bull gear and then pull the axle housing out of the rear end. I think it might be easier to take the deck off, though. I have some pretty good used inner and outer axle bearings for $10 a piece if you find you would rather use them than pay for new ones.

If you remove the PTO assembly and having the tractor jacked up so you can turn the wheel, you can look through the holes in the bull gear, using a flashlight to inspect the inner bearings while turning the axle. Usually there will also be damage to the bearing cage when a ball breaks in half.

I usually just pull the bolt out of the end of the axle working through the PTO opening and then remove the housing with axle. Then you can replace the bad bearings. I have reinstalled the axle by my self, but it does help if you have a helper. Good luck

I just got finished doing the inner bearing on M-TA, I just went on and pulled the deck--- not too bad I hung the steering post from the rafters and pulled the top with an engine hoist with three large eye bolts screwed to the deck. If you do it this way you can take your time and look at everything else in the innards and clean everything real good.

It will depend upon what you have for shop equipment. The inner bearing can be replaced with just pulling the PTO and removing the outer axle shaft bearing cap. Then push the axle out of the bull gear and move the gear aside. You can then access the bearing retainer and remove the bearing. It van be done that way but I wouldn't call it the easiest. Since the PTO opening in the H is so small I always remove the deck.
