I have this SMTA.Stuck motor. Tried to sell it.I also have an MD.It too has a bad motor. Now ,what if......OH the MD engine, then transplant into SMTA?Lot of work i'm sure. But would be a cool tractor when done. Probably never happen.......Fun to think about though.

Go for it but I am to poor to pay attention so I can't loan anything ,maybe encouraging words now and then.

No way. The SMDTA is only a SMDTA with the correct Z code castings. IMO if you OH one engine it should be the SMDTA even if it is more work. Come on, the bearings will only run you $850. :)

Its a 'genuine' gasoline SMTA .The MD is a 1952.It
already has 4" pistons/sleeves.I really dont care if
it is a 'Z' code SMTA diesel or not.IMHO,A SMTA with
a diesel engine is a SMTA DIESEL.I guess this would
be in the same category as the 'mysterious' Super
HTA...

Makes sense then. I thought both were diesels. Its not a SHTA until its a high crop.

Ship it to ct or close and Id buy the smta

Probably the hydraulics would be one of the more costly problems. SMTA gas pump and manifold is different. Unless near end of MD production the front cover on the MD is different than a SMD through 450-D. MD starter won't work on the SMTA and a starter from a SMD stage 2 or SMTAD or late 6 diesels that works is not laying around everywhere. Then you need the linkage to engage starter and the switchover linkage is different. For a user a 400, 450 or some other diesel starters could be used with switch that would eliminate the need for linkage to starter. MD throttle rod would need lengthen and MD steering post a spacer under it.
Just hit the high spots and not all odds and ends to complete. Things like MD hood, fuel tank, frame rails and other should be obvious.

The MD is torn down in my shop. The SMTA is in my yard.I am in western Colorado. The high bid at the auction was $750.00.Should have let it go.....

All you guys that want a SMTA, I have one already restored in my heated shop. I need to move it East SD on I-90.

You speaking of the sale at Grand Junction. I asked before and if you answered I missed it.Do you know of Al Heaton cattle rancher . His ranch is East Pines. Good friend when I was in Dove Creek co. Thanks Bill

No.The 45th annual sale of 'Jim's(Jimmy Flowers) Auction',Montrose. The sale in GJ is in two week. Then there is another one at Loma.(Western Slope Cattlemans Assn.)

Did you say you should have sold the SMTA for $750? At that price I could have it shipped to Michigan and still be happy with it.

I'd love to have one at that price to! If I had some money little far away but for that I think I'd make it lol

I'd like a SMTA to restore and have for a personal show and parade tractor....But I wouldn't put a MD engine in it even if the engine was proved to be good and given to me. I admit I've never owned or used an IH gas start diesel, but everyone of them I've ever seen was a virtual dog compared to the gas models of the same vintage. True, they got a little better fuel ecomony, but with the reduced power and their "gotta be careful" shortcomings, they just didn't inpress me much.. A buddy of mine bought a brand new 450 diesel and put it under a new picker...complete with a supersnoot and two years later the head was found to be cracked in 8 places. I once owned and wore out a Super M gas and it would outhorse any Super MD or Super MTA diesel I ever saw and it's only upgrade was it had the 4 1/8 sleeves and pistons in it. Sorry, JMHO of course...

Think it was 2009 I went to a small farm sale with hi hopes to buy a Super MTA. I looked it over a couple days earlier and it was pure junk, 'sheet metal, no sign of paint, tires, just junk, thought I'd be the only one dumb enough to bid on it. Went for 3400 bucks.

A tractor like that isn't worth 'squat' here. The only tractor pulling we do here is stock antique(pre '59).
