IH running gear w/spoke wheels

This IH running gear is in the classifieds. I have been looking for an IH running gear with spoke wheels for some time. The wheels look like they are pretty large. Definitely not 15" or 16". Anyone know anything about this gear? Like the model number or something? Anyone know the model of a similar IH gear with 15" or 16" spoke wheels? Do you know if these had bearings or the hubs rode directly on the axles?

I am wanting to make a nice hay rack both to use as well as use at shows. Must be IH and have the spoke wheels.

That last bit sounds like a "wanted" ad. I would buy that just because I like it. Don't know that I would trust it with too many bales though.

CONFIRMATION. This is NOT a want ad. This is a post looking for information on a model number of an IH implement. The information is needed to place a want ad.

I have two running gears identical to that one, cept mine have no longer have any paint on them. I'd bet that the one in the ad like both of mine was originally on steel wheels that were cut down and rubber rims welded on. Mine both have 15" rims welded on them, I'd guess the one in the add is on 18" rims maybe? They have roller bearings but they are old style roller bearings with about 4" long rollers.

Brian, I have a parts catalog of IH wagons from the 1940's and later which shows a similar one that is called "Improved All-Purpose Farm Truck" and was made from 1940 to 1954. It has some of the same features as the wagon in the photo but is definitely not identical. I'm thinking the one pictured was made somewhat earlier. The one shown in my catalog has two 16682W roller bearings with 451898R1 races in each of the four wheels. It could be ordered with 28" or 32" diameter spoke wheels. I'm thinking the ones on the wagon for sale are most likely cutoff's welded to a rim of some smaller size but can't tell in the photo. They may or not be original IH wheels but spoke wheels on rubber aren't shown anywhere in my catalog. Hope this might answer a couple of your questions although I can't ID it through my catalog which contains mostly later model wagon of the 1950's and 60's or as IH calls them tractor wagons, Hal.

Sorry, it wasn't an accusation. Don't be so touchy. I thought you had already found the one in the picture and couldn't figure out why you were looking for another one.

That looks like the McCormick-Deering All-Purpose Farm Truck. It was built from 1931 to 1940. I can't find a reference to pneumatic tires for that model. The improved version had 16" wheels available. The wheel bearings were straight roller bearings (not tapered rollers like you might expect today).

This was the model before the "Improved" one Hal described. Wheels like that may have been available or may have come from something else that happened to have the same size spindles.

Jim, I just got the part catalog in the mail this afternoon that I obtained from Mike Becker on IH wagons and boxes. What timing I guess. Looking for a nice No. 100 gear and a No. 100 Flare Grain Box and always like to have a catalog of what I'm looking for beforehand. I guessed it was just an earlier model of the earliest one in my WA-2A catalog with an September 1970 print date, Hal.

The relevant parts catalog is an excellent place to start when looking for any piece of equipment. I was looking at the wagon fiche a couple days ago, maybe identical to your printed copy (WA-2A Rev 14). It had the improved truck but not the original.

I assume you know that the #100 flair box wasn't necessarily paired up with the #100 gear. The #100 gear came along to go under a self unloading box. Check Paint Committee decision I32.

I think the earlier WA-2 parts books showed a couple of earlier gears/trailers. I may have one of those books around here yet somewhere.

Kevin, I don't know what model wagon you have but I have an old parts catalog which shows one old spoke wheel wagon. The one shown is called "Improved All-Purpose Farm Truck" and was built from 1940 to 1954. In the catalog it identifies the wheel bearings as 16682W (total of 8 per wagon/4 axles). That number has been replaced by ST1334 and currently 441855R91. The later number is available per Messick's for $64.06 each. They are just a low speed straight roller type bearing and not the more common tapered ones. I would think if you take one out of your wagon and go to a good bearing outlet they would have or could obtain the right ones for a lot less - that is definitely the case in my area here in Missouri. One more note, my catalog is like next to brand new condition (was printed in 1975) and the only pencil marks I've rim across in the whole book is a penciled in note beside this bearing with the new part numbers. I verified the new part no's. through other means so other folks have been there as well, Hal.

There was a "Farmall Wagon" listed in parts catalog 30-W (from 1938) that was made from 1929-31 and had steel wheels, but no pictures of the gear other than a few individual parts appear in the catalog. It appears that these were only available with steel wheels with straight roller bearings. It seems that the "All-Purpose Truck" replaced the Farmall Wagon. The All-Purpose Truck was made from 1932-40. The "Improved All-Purpose Farm Truck replaced it and was made from 1940-54. The book shows that steel was standard equipment and pneumatic tires and 8-bolt wheels were optional on these gears. Both used straight roller bearings. It would appear that the "No. 6 Farm Truck" replaced this gear and was made from 1954-56. Steel wheels were no longer available on the No. 6 Farm Truck and the hubs and wheels were modernized with 5-bolt wheels and timken bearings.

(quoted from post at 19:59:31 02/12/15) There was a "Farmall Wagon" listed in parts catalog 30-W (from 1938) that was made from 1929-31 and had steel wheels, but no pictures of the gear other than a few individual parts appear in the catalog. I just finished up a wagon article for RPM and I got the "Farmall Wagon" wrong. I found a couple references to the name but that was about it. I concluded (incorrectly) that they were just references to the "All-Purpose truck". By the way, the #6 was available on steel wheels.

The Farmall Wagon and All-Purpose Truck were probably similar, but looking at the part numbers it appears that they didn't share all that many parts.

Interesting info on the steel wheels being available for the #6. There's no mention in any of the parts books I have on them being equipped so.

Looks like the "No. 80 Tractor-Trailer" may have replaced the #6. It was built from '57-60. Steel wheels aren't shown for that gear, either.

I could have it wrong too on the All-Purpose truck having rubber available. Looking closer at the book shows only 1940 and newer gears having that option. Steel wheels and bearings don't interchange between the All-Purpose/Improved trucks, either.

Sometimes when updated, items disappeared from the parts catalogs. WA-2 says to destroy the earlier 30-W book. No mention of the "Farmall Wagon" is in WA-2, or at least the later revisions of that book I have. 4-6 pages of a parts listing would have easily everything the Farmall Wagon had to offer. When that book became WA-2A, the "All-Purpose Truck" seemingly disappears, or, at least isn't a part of the later revision I have.

This may be a dumb question, but if it even existed, what is/was covered in the WA-1 catalog? Old wood gears/boxes? WA-2 says wagons built '29 and later in the intro notes

My only wagon parts catalog is WA-2A, Revision 12, 12/84. I don't know what any earlier catalogs had. 30-W probably included the wooden wagons. This one starts with the Improved All-Purpose. It shows both steel and pneumatic tires for the Improved, but only pneumatic for the #6. I have a price list from 1954 that lists both with both choices. The 1940 GL catalog had the original All-Purpose listed with no mention of pneumatic tires. The #80 is an upgraded version of the #6.

My copy of 30-W is 32 pages from Dec. of 1938 and covers only the Farmall Wagon ('29-'31), All-Purpose Truck ('32 and since) and the Tractor-Trailer ('36 and since).

Good idea referencing a price list for the options.

I just ran across an eBay listing for a reprint of 27-W. It does have the wooden wagons.
