Farmall A governor/throttle linkage help

I have a farmall A i use with a woods belly mower to mow my lawn. Well in the dead of winter my tractor fever is burning hot so i had to find something to tinker with. I always thought my A idled high. On the rod from the governor arm to the carburator was a spring following the linkage rod. Looking at parts diagrams online im not seeing the spring in any pictures, so i removed it. Tractor idles a lot lower now but i dont seem to get the top end rpm out of it anymore. Also when i rev her up she surges a little now. So questions are, is that spring supposed to be there? Was this a band aid the previous owner added to get more rpm out of it and stop surging? Where is the governor spring on the a? Is it internal? What adjustment or parts should i be looking at to get this tractor running like originally intended?

Likely yes the spring should be there it works to help keep the gov from hunting at high RPM like it is doing now.

There is no rod on the arm going from the gov to the carb. They added that to keep it from surging. There is a surge bumber spring in the gov and it is adjusted by turning the screw after loosening the jamb nut on the bottom of the gov housing. Your gov could be messed up but first with engine off take the pin out of the arm going to the gov. Now open the throttle holding the carb rod so the carb is fully open the pin should bo back in. If it doesent the clevis needs to be adjusted so it will.Thats how you set the linkage for throttle response. You gov mite need some repairs but first get that linkage adjusted correct.

Are we talking adjusting the rod from the carb to governor? There is a bumper spring on the rod from throttle control to governor on right side of tractor. I wont be back down in the shop till tommorow night now. Wife is making me watch this darn football game with family.

Yup thats the one i removed because i didnt see it in the parts fiche. Is that the rod we are discussing adjusting? The one on the carb side?

The other person might have added that spring just to keep any looseness out of the linkage. As Gene says---doesn't need to be there.
If it doesn't idle down correctly after all adjustments are made---a last thing to try is look to see if the throttle plate is on right side up.
Our SMTA wouldn't idle down, & the mechanic got the throttle plate in upside down.

Is the governor arms supposed to move free forward and backwards with the linkage removed? Linkage from carb removed my gov arm moves free front to back with no tension. Which position should the arm be in for this adjustment? Or is it not supposed to do that?
