966 oil pressure

when i start the 966 it about 55 psi of oil pressure and when its running it holds it when i idle it down it drops to about 15 psi its doesnt have many hours 5400 do i have the start of a problem very little blow by and doesnt use any oil thanks

If it has 55 psi running hot and 15 psi idle hot, that's still about new condition. I would not worrie about that. Some with that hours are lucky to have 40 psi hot and 5-10 psi idle

I'd be for checkig that problem out.

It ought to be running at 70lbs all the time, hot or cold. Something is sure wrong.

Basically, what you're seeing is the pressure drops when the oil is at running temperature and thins down. You see the variance in pressure because there is at least one bearing somewhere in the engine that has a greater clearance than you'd like it to have. 15 lbs at idle with the engine warm is not that bad. I wouldn't worry too much about it if it's running good. You can try running a higher viscosity oil if it's bothering you.

If this is a fairly recent problem, that is that your oil psi used to be higher on this tractor, I would first change the oil filter. Sometimes I have seen the filter to cause a problem restricting oil pressure.Mark

I would also add that if it has suddenly changed you might want to pull the oil pressure relief valve. It is quite easy to get out being on the outside of the block and they do have trouble with snap ring failure and deterioration of the valve.
