Oil pan gasket, to seal or not?

Got a new oil pan gasket for my farmall a as it has developed some drips. It is a paper style gasket not cork. Should i use a light layer of sealer on it or not? If so what type is best? All i have in the shop right now is permatex black.

I use permatex high tack sealer on my gaskets. it is oil and gas resistant and does not get dry and stick like shellac. gaskets are easily removable. I an not a fan of silicone gaskets , only as a last resort. with that permatex black you don't even need the gasket, as it a gasket maker. even cleaning off old silicone gaskets is a pain.

Put a good coating off "Gun" grease on the gasket. Old technique and makes it easier to take pan off if you want to double check something inside!

I just cut one out of brown paper for our C, I put silicone on the bottom and grease on the top.
Like F-Dean said, then you can drop the pan to check something, mine should last a long time.

When I built my BA which is half B half A I used no gasket all I used was silicone gasket maker and it has been that way for 4 plus years now and holding just fine. I even used a used head gasket and it is doing just fine

I use permatex no. 2 the non hardening one. Coat surface of oil pan with permatex, then apply gasket and let set for 2-3 hours so it sets up good. Then apply permatex to gasket surface going toward block. IMHO, suface of pan needs to be totally flat, without dips or warps, etc. Fill in with jb weld if necessary.
Torque is probably 20 lbs. or so. Torque evenly around pan starting in the middle of each side. Do a retorque several times.

I'd for sure use some RTV sealer on it before assembly. I like to use this blue brushable glue stuff to glue it to the pan before assembly to make sure it doesn't slip.

Put copper coat on the pan side and then a little permatex around the bolt holes which usually leak. I much prefer gaskets rather than permatex over everything. The gaskets have smoother surfaces.
