656 gets stuck in reverse and a forward gear. im gonna take a look at it soon. im assuming worn linkage. anything else I should look for? thanks in advance.

Generally the tip of the shifter lever is the reason. Use the archives to find a picture of the shifter (might be for a M but will be the same. Jim

The 656 is a different animal than an M. It has a series of shifting gates, levers etc up above. The gates get worn along with the pin in the end of the cross shaft. It is a matter of either being extra careful when shifting to make sure it is completely out of gear before going for another gear or rebuilding the mechanism. It depends on the age as to what style gates and shaft it has as there were several changes made.

I have a 656 and an old local retired IH mechanic told me when I got it to always go to neutral before going to another gear. By going to neutral he stated when coming out of a gear move into neutral and move the shifter from one side to the other before going into another gear. I've followed that rule ever since I've owned my 656 for about 4 years and have never had an issue, Hal.
