Help ID'ing a IH sicklebar mower?

I'll try and get some picts tonight. Picked this mower up last night to keep the weeds/grass mowed down. Will put on my M after I get it fixed. It looks like you take the hitch off and it bolts to the vertical hitch mounts. Will need to make a new pitman arm, but will need some measurement after I get it ID'd. Is there any place I can look at IH mowers to try and ID it. I looked at the last night in the dark and couldn't find anything to tell me which model it is?

Bob

Hello Bob, I have books for several of the IH mowers, seems like everything else they were continually making improvements and new model numbers but they are all pretty similar if they have a wood pitman. If you get a pic posted or just want to give me a call I could try to help you id it, have the measurements for the pitman wrote down somewhere also. Good luck, Mike, 509-595-2682

Hi Mike,

Here's a picture of the mower. Hopefully it uploads rights. I will need measurement for the pitman stick.

Hi, I believe it is an A-21 because the PTO shaft and belt drive pulley are on the left side from the rear but has mounting hardware for a H.
The reason it is called an A-21 and the PTO drive is on the left is to line up with the offset PTO on IH A and B tractor models. There was also a C-21 for C and SC tractors but PTO drive was in the center of the mower to match PTO shaft on C and SC tractors. We had a C-21 and later 3pt C-28 model mowers. C-28 was also available with fast hitch.

In the photo, it is identified as C-21 but I believe again it is an A-21 because of offset PTO drive.

Jim.

Looks like your correct on it being an A21. I rescued it out of a scrap pile. Everything turns on it yet except can't lift the sicklebar. I'll have to remove the zerks and get it oiled up good.

Thanks,
Bob

Bob, does your M have live hydraulics? You could hook up a hydraulic cylinder to where the rod with the pulley on it connects to the large U link to the left of the drive pulley.
On the C-21 model when mounted on the SC tractor there was a rod than ran back from the hydra-touch rock shaft that connected to another rock shaft mounted behind the seat and an arm from this rock shaft was connected via a chain to where that large U link is connected. This rear rock shaft was also used to lift rear cultivator and 2 furrow plow.

Your mower is a No 16-HM.
The A-21 and C-21 mowers had completely different drawbars. The A-21 drawbar was attached to plates which were bolted the inner sides of the final drive housings. On the C-21, of which I have one that I use on my Super C, the drawbar is clamped directly onto the hexagonal axle housings. I note in your photos that the drawbar braces are a bit mangled. I also note that the mower probably had connections to a Lift-All cylinder for raising the cutter bar. Hope this helps. Sid.

I think Cedric is on the right track, but it has to be a later model than a 16 because of the hydraulic linkage. The double springs on the back say it is heavier than a 21. I don't have the right parts catalog handy to verify too closely, but I'm going with an id of HM-24.

Yes, the braces are pretty bent up. I'll have to take them to work and heat them up to get straight. I was assuming that the other piece hooked to the lift-all some how.

Jim Becker. Thank you for correcting me. I have limited knowledge on mowers produced after the 1940's. Sid.

Hello Bob, looks like a HM 21 or 24 mower to me, different than the mowers on my SC or SA. No tail wheel should rule out 25, 27, 31 series mowers. Pitman length in my Webb sickle service catalog calls for 35 11/16" ($21.29) All wear parts still available last year. I do not have a book for that mower. Good luck, Mike.

Hello Bob. Make sure you get the correct length pitman arm. My friend put a new one on his mower which is similar looking to yours and it was a slightly different length and it threw the register off between the guards and sections and it would NOT cut at all.
