Case-IH 695

I have a 695 tractor with mount o matic loader. It has been overheating after an hour under load. I was looking at the radiator and there is some heat exchanger infront of the radiator. It is probably 14 " talk and almost as wide as the radiator. The radiator fill is in the center top of the radiator and extends out the top through the hood.

Is that second heat exchanger an oil cooler? It almost looks like the tractor might have had a cab at one time as there is a rubber sealing strip on the hood in front of the operator station.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Hi Phil, yes, the small rad in front of main rad is an oil cooler for hydraulic/transmission oil.
The oil cooler should have a thumb screw that will allow it to swing out of the way to clean the main rad. They main rad is difficult to clean out the air passages as I recall rad cooling tubes are staggered making the air swirl around the tubes. You have to use an air gun, blowing from the fan side first then from the front side. Also clean the air cleaner filter. Other possible causes of over heating:
1) Thermostat stuck closed
2) Rad core clogged with lime
3) Water pump

After engine has warmed up, rev engine to about 2000 RPM and look at bottom rad hose to see if it is collasping.

Thanks Jim. That is all good information. I pulled the radiator and oil cooler. The radiator was pretty calciumed up inside as well as being clogged between the oil cooler and the radiator. '

So the radiator is in for a re-core $500 going to have the oil cooler combed and flushed for another $100. That should help a lot. Now I have to figure out a pre-filter arrangement.

Now that I know how easy that oil cooler comes off I can clean that area better.

Between the loader and the bolt on hood that area is not very accessible.

I am going to replace the thermostat and hoses while I am in there. The hoses were pretty bulged out at the ends. Hopefully it will be running cooler after this work.

I will check the bottom hose also.

Do you (or anyone) know if there is a coolant filter in this tractor. I am going to change all the filters I find on it. But I was wondering if there was a filter and I will make sure I change that too. I can't find my manual anywhere for this tractor.

Jim has all three cooling issues summed up, had to do all three on our 495 for a heating issue. Main problem was rad and water pump.

Coolant filter was optional. It will be evident on the side of the block if so equipped. I've only seen one 95 series "here" with a coolant filter.

The hyd cooler was easier to clean before the Case people bastardized the style of the grill to a Case one with the 85 series. The 84 series the front grill was removable and you could swing the cooler out easily.

When you change the fuel filters, shut the valve off at the tank, unscrew the filters, screw the new ones on (already filled with fuel), turn the tank valve on and it should fire right up.
