How long would you reckon a hydro slipping in hi, would continue to work in low and slip in hi on a hobby farm that would use it for a loader tractor and pulling a shredder? Have no interest in fixing it, just want to use it as is for light work.

Someone more knowledgeable will pipe in but I'd think the longer you run it the more damage you'll do. It might be terminal at this point (cost more to fix than it's worth) or it might not but the longer you run it the more wear it's going to get in places you might not want worn.

My thought process is if it's slipping

1. either fluid isn't getting pumped in the volume or pressure it's supposed to and running it with that slip in the pump is going to accelerate the wear, what might need wear plates or some machine work if run long enough will trash the pump.

2. The other possibility is the fluid pressure and volume is okay but the by-pass is in the transmission, again fluid under pressure being forced somewhere it shouldn't be will cause more wear.

Before I'd make a decision I'd recommend getting a manual and doing basic test to figure out what's really wrong, it would be bad to trash a tractor worth thousands because you didn't want to make a repair that cost hundreds.

I recomend getting the manuals as well.

Have you changed fluid and filter recently?

If its weak and "slipping" due to worn pump then run it cause rebuild is going to be expensive. If its weak due to sucking air your going to destroy somthing eventually. The IH manuals are pretty good. You may get lucky and its something simple like a releif valve or a bad O ring or plugged filter.

Why are 'farming' with it in HI? Only use hi for road travel. All other times leave it in low.And keep the RPMs up. The damage is done. A rebuild is comming soon. However run till it quits. You are looking at a 5-10,000 dollar repair bill....BTW. Something to think about. Most guys will junk it rather than fix it."It is not worth the repair bill". Wrong! Can you replace it with another (good) Hydro70 for that bill? No.The replacement may be in the same shape (or worse) as the one you own. It(the replacement)could also have engine;hydralic or other problems.....So if you have an otherwise good tractor(you know what you have),fix it! you will be bettewr off in the long run.Unless of coarse you just want a 'new' tractor.Herrs Machine(Washington,Kansas) is THE place to get parts/reman hydros.....

Is it slipping in reverse? It could be something as simple as a adjustment on the forward reverse lever. Do yourself and get a 544/656 troubleshooting guide. It will help you a lot. They can be found on ebay reasonable. There's been many a hydro traded or junked because of simple adjustments. Eason

When it slips do you need to bring the speed lever back to neutral before you can move again or do you just have to pull it back a bit to lessen the load.

If you have to return the lever to neutral before the transmission will work again the problem most likely is worn plates that separate under load. If you just have to move the lever back a bit it would tend to be more like a cracked line of relief valve (Foot-N-Inch) setting.
