404 International starter drive

I got a used flywheel for my 404 International, my old flywheel had 116 teeth and the new flywheel has 90 teeth. My question is what starter drive would I need to replace my old drive?

ASSUMING the starter and drive are correct for the tractor, why not replace the ring gear with the correct one, or get the correct flywheel/ring gear???

I can see your point, but ASSUMING you can get a drive that will work with the flywheel and starter, by be WRONG for the tractor, and down the line anyone needing to repair/replace the starter will have a nightmare on their hands.

I assume you got the new flywheel to avoid changing the ring gear?

If there was nothing else wrong with the original flywheel, replacing the ring gear isn't that bad. All you need to do is cut the old one off with a torch or angle grinder. Put the new one in the oven, get it to about 300 degrees or so, and drop it over the flywheel. New ring gear, new starter drive, you'll be set for life.

I agree w/ Bob and mkirsch. Proper ring gear on your flywheel seems best. There are 5 different flywheels listed for C-135 engine. If you don't have correct one real problems are possible. Could not find a 90 tooth gear listed for c-135.
What machine did flywheel you purchased come off of ?

Rick, That is a puzzle as 404 parts book only show a 166 tooth like your original one as correct. Maybe someone replaced the one on donor tractor with something different and now you have it ?

Can you get the starter off the donor tractor ? At least that combo must have worked when on the donor tractor.

Good luck, Bill

The 90 tooth ring gear was used A, B, C, 100, 130, and 140 tractors. Those tractors all have a starter installed from the back with an inertia engaged drive. The 404 and newer tractors have the starter installed from the front and have a lever engaged drive.

Do the ring gears have the same OD dimensions?

The dimensions are the same, I believe mine was an older model and the new flywheel is from a newer model. My starter comes in from the back like a BN. I may have to track down a 116 tooth gear and a new starter drive for mine.

Parts catalog only shows one flywheel and ring gear for all serial numbers.

Flywheel: 376810R91

Ring gear: 376886R1 (116 teeth), still available from CIH for a little over $80.00.

Start drive is Delco #1939109, CIH #87715475, $178 at CIH, GOOGLE the Delco # for lots of sources form $30 on up.

My guess is that somewhere in the life of the donor tractor it had the ring gear replaced and it was replaced with the gear that was used on tractors up until the 404 series. If the ring gear is not in like new condition you can assume that the tractor was run with that ring gear not causing problems.

Check the tooth engagement of your drive in the replacement ring gear. It will most likely work just fine as long as the ODs of the ring gear is the same. The tooth engagement is pretty loose between the drive and ring gear and it s not uncommon to find a couple drives with different amount of teeth being used on the same ring gear. That is the case of drive number 1939109. That is a 9 tooth drive that was replaced with a drive with 10 teeth during the production run of the 656 tractors. There was no change in ring gear when the drive was changed on those tractors.
