1951 Super C Rear Axle

I have a 1951 Super C with one long axle and one short rear axle. The previous owner broke one of the long axles and replaced with a short axle. Now I have another short axle as a replacement. How hard is to replace an axle in a Super C? And what seals and gaskets do I need to put it back together.
 
Another thing to watch is there two different length axle houseings out there.Be sure to the 'right' axle'.But why change it?Lot of SCs had two different axles for different applications.Its more interesting as is.So even if you are makeing a 'top quality'/'Factory perfect' show tractor(there is no such thing as "perfect"), Leave it be and enjoy.
 
In addition, to the correct length housing, a common solution is to mearly cut the long axle to length and clean the cut to look "made that way".
The long axle is however valuable long to others. Jim
 
I have another Farmall Super C with long axles. When my father purchased it in 1952, the dealer wanted to charge extra for it the long axles. My father said, "Get out your saw and cut them off." The dealer decided not to charge extra.
 
We had the long axels on a 200 (they came standard) and it sure was nice for working 44-inch rows of Tobacco.
 
If all you are doing is replacing the axle it can be done by removing the wheel from the axle. Remove the axle housing end cap. Remove the PTO assembly or block off cover. Remove the two cap screws that hold the ring gear on the axle. Pull the axle out of the bull gear and inner bearing. The outer bearing will come out with the axle. If you are going to replace the inner oil seal you will also have to remove the axle housing to gain access to the bearing and seal.

Newer replacement axles used a snap ring to hold the bull gear onto the axle rather than the two cap screws and washer plate.

Axles came in three different lengths. There were 80", 88" and 100" tread width axles listed in the parts book. There is also a different axle housing listed for use with the 100" axles versus the 80" or 88" axles.
 
Thanks, I have an 80" axle on one side and 88" on
the other. At one time the left side 88" axle broke
and was replaced by an 80" axle from a Farmall C.
The longer axle just bugs me because it sticks out
further and is an invitation to catch on the edge of
a shop door etc. The replacement axle is from a
Farmall C (same parts C the other replacement axle
came from.

I see from the parts manual that there is an inner
ball bearing for the rear axle and an outer ball
bearing for the rear axle. Should I replace them
too, or leave well enough alone?
 
The outer bearing you will have out so you can easily inspect it for wear and roughness. The inner one will be more difficult to access unless the axle housing is removed. It has been a long time since I replaced an axle on a C and I don't remember if the bearing and seal can be accessed without removing either the axle housing or transmission deck. You may be able to move the bull gear over enough to check it out but I am not sure.
