Follow-up on 706G

I had posted last week about a 706 gasser with a cab for sale near me. It had sat outside unused for over 3 years. I checked it out and drove it around yesterday. No water came out of oilpan or hyd drain, seller had a temporary battery strapped to the steps. It started easily and ran OK, no smoke. Once it warmed up, it sounded great, still no smoke. It shifted easily into all gears, the TA works, but while in TA mode the tractor jerks like the clutch pedal is being quickly stomped on and off, but only in L3 & L4. (hydraulic adjustment or sign TA is going out?) The inside of the cab is a mess. Birds lived in it for the 3 years, so you can guess how that looks. Heat, AC, lights do not work. Cluster gauge works, tach is broken. 4 excellent tires and it has a FH, a set of remotes, and both PTOs. He won't move much on his asking price of $4000.

MCV is out someplace, hopefully just stuck from sitting and NOT T/A itself. Had that jerking problem with the one here. Don't recall what gears or if in T/A or high when it jerked. Anyway here is what I got for answers, when I asked. We ignored the problem till the T/A went out after a few years(about 2-3) of jerking. Then when pulling apart the trans. to replace T/A we found broken spring coils from the MCV(rebuilt MCV and found the missing spring) in the casting. IF we had checked that over first when it happened the T/A might of been fine.

If anyone who posted on the other thread reads this thanks for the help, I forgot I posted it(till I tried logging in for another problem).

Though probably a good deal, the TA is out. The hydraulic TA, when the lever is back, is dependent on a sprag clutch to prevent the body of the unit from turning backwards. With this TA there is a hydraulic clutch that prevents free wheeling down hills, it is not powerful enough to hold the engine power, and never was. The direct drive is also hydraulic. It is a much stronger and robust clutch. It can handle engine power, as applied through the TA. If the Hydraulic (MCV) system were toast, the tractor would only move in TA, not direct, and then, with the sprag clutch failing, it might not move at all. Jim

I just had a thought. The jerking might be the reason it sat for three years. The previous owner didn't want to fix it, not from sitting for cause.

I have not seen a 706 priced under $4500 here in central Iowa, unless it was really rough, needed tires etc. If the tires are good as you say, I don't think that is too high priced. If it is close too home, that is worth something too.

I would have thought it sat because they could afford the gas to run it , but fixing it may have also been a factor . 4000 is fair if you need a gas hog , I wouldn't think repair would be terrible but you never know how repairs will turn out.

If it needs a TA, you need a decent shop with a relatively flat floor, a way to lift the cab off the tractor, splitting stands, some way to lift/handle the TA section, and plenty of time.

Paying to have it done by a pro will easily double the price of the tractor.

I've got everything but the time to do it. As long
as direct drive was still working fine, I'm sure I'd
get along without the TA. My Grandpa farmed for
years with two 706's, never saw him use the TA once.
My tractor will have an easy life compared to his.

If you think you really have to have it offer him $3500. You can buy a nice running, straight, 706 with good fenders around here for $4000. The tires are a very redeeming factor but it just seems like with the TA and all the other little stuff you could end up with $6000 or $7000 in it pretty easily when done. Don't think that the tractor will work forever with the low side of the TA out. Sooner or later it will fail altogether and not move at all.
