47 H my new toy

I finally got the pics to upload here is my 47H with the 9-speed rear end. I tired firing it up today but didn't have a good enough battery. I think it was well worth the $500 I paid for it.

Well worth 500. I got mine for 600 and had
to put a little money in it but not much
at all. Having good tires is worth ALOT. 9
speed? How did they manage that? Hi and
low range?

Looks like a good purchase, just remember if it is still 6volt
it will be POSITIVE ground and make sure you use heavy
cables at least 0 size if not 00 size. I would get a tune up kit
for the ignition system and rebuild the carb, change oil and
filter and clean fuel line before trying to start it. That's just
my opinion and what I always do when I purchase a tractor
that hasn't ran for a while. Good luck with you purchase.
Jim.

It's a m&w aftermarket I understand it gives you 4 extra gears between 4th and 5th. There is a cable you pull to set the gearing. Right now it's froze I will work on freeing it later.

I would say the tires are worth what you paid. I
got a 51 H with the 9 speed. We don't see many H's
with the 9 speed around here, mostly M's.

This is my first it is also the first H my dad or I have had with this style seat. We have a 44 and a 48 bot new by my grandfather with the spring style seat.

John how does the 9-speed work? do you just pull the cable until it engages?

Have the clutch in when you engage the 9 speed. Or with the
engine off. I have the transmission in gear when engaging so
the gears dont grind. Also, when in high range, your pto
speed, and belly pump speeds are doubled.

My H with that style sucks. Don't know if
that's typical but my neighbor has the
spring style and is much better. Mine
could just be wore out. Don't know. I
wasn't around when it was new. The Vin
shows to be a 43. Was told its a 48 when I
bought it.

That 9 speed that is really cool! Never
seen one. What would be the purpose?

and pull the valve cover.and make sure no valves are stuck...i did not and crunk it and bent 2 push rods. unstuck valves easyly ,,had i only. listened to a friend...but i did not know how to test ...... push on those springs by hand ...before you start....dewy

I dunno, Chad. Looks like a pile o'problems to me. Tell ya what: I'll give ya $550 and take it off yer hands to save ya the suffering...

;-)

Actually, congratulations on a good find. Thanks for sharing the pictures.

I think you did really well! It looks to be all there or real close and it runs. The money maker on it really is the rear tires and the fenders plus the 9 speed. I would have bought it for parts for that price with the tires and fenders. GOOD buy!

And spray stems, springs, rocker arms, push rods down real good with wd40. Should help break any surface rust. Take the plugs out and do same to cylinders. Crank it over by hand slowly without the plugs in it to make sure nothing is stuck.

(quoted from post at 01:34:40 01/25/15) ...That 9 speed that is really cool! Never

Gives you 4 speeds between 4th gear and 5th gear. 4th gear on a stock h is like 5.1 mph at wide open throttle. Road gear is 16.5 mph at WOT. Big gap as you can see between stock gears. Some jobs like rotary hoeing need 6.5 to 7.5 mph to work properly. Contrarily light jobs like raking hay you can gear up and throttle down to do the job and save a little fuel if you have the 9 speed with a ground powered rake. Or move heavy wagons at less than road gear but still faster than 5.1 mph. Road gear which does not have much torque.

Really all the M&W overdrive is a little 2-speed gearbox that fits ahead of the tranny input shaft with direct drive maintained and a secondary speed that overdrives the tranny input shaft, the PTO input shaft, and the belley pump hydraulics all at the same time (so not good in that respect). 5th gear is locked out with the overdrive engaged or otherwise it would provide 10 speeds.

Speed order is Direct 1, Direct 2, Direct 3, Direct 4, Overdrive 1, Overdrive 2, Overdrive 3, Overdrive 4, Direct 5. (Overdrive 5 is locked out as an option to prevent choosing).

That all said, any job where you need to use the PTO at 540 rpm then the 9 speed will usually not help as it overspeeds the PTO and belly pump hydraulics so I personally would only run at about half throttle or so in the high range of the overdrive to avoid damaging those components. There was a belly pump disconnect offered but most do not have this installed. Limit the full throttle applications to direct drive range. and all will be fine.

I am always amazed at the number of H tractors
still "out there".

I believe about 400,000 were made? What a
testament to popularity.

Chad you made a great deal as the tires are at
least $800.00,fenders $225.00,9 speed $600.00 so
if the rest was junk you still made a great deal.
Just think of those poor folk's on the east coast
that pay 3-4,000 for stock M that should be in the
750.00 price range. Good luck to you Wildman from
MO.

rankrank1, sorry but you are misinformed on how the 9 speed works in a H or M. Nothing ahead of the input shaft. Input shaft is replaced with one having 2 different size gears to drive 2 different size constant mess gears on the counter shaft. Shifter locks one or other set of gears to the counter shaft. When in high range the countershaft is turned faster than standard speed. Since gears 1 though 4, reverse, pto and hydraulic pump are driven from the counter shaft they are affected. Since 5th is just the transmission input shaft locked to the top shaft its speed doesn't change in high or standard range.
Picture of a hiesler 9 speed, M&W works on the same principal.

When the wife was 20 it was nice when the work cloths came off. when the wife was 30 it was nice when she put her work cloths back on. When the wife was 40 it was nice when I gave the her a set of coveralls, when the wife 50 it was nice when she no longer came out to the shop. When the wife was 60 it was nice when she no longer allowed me in the house.

See life gets better
I'm old and rusty too.
