got it home Farmall H with 9-speed tranny

A NINE speed tranny? I know I'm ignorant in some things, but didn't they come as a factory 4 speed only? Was this an aftermarket unit? Pix please?

. 9 speed H? Never heard of one. However, the M was produced with a factory 7 speed in Louisville. (Or so I'm told).

7 speed Louisville M? Respectfully, no.

All M's came from the factory as 5-speeds, and no plain Ms were built in the Louisville plant. Some SUPER M's were built in Louisville.

Two manufacturers, Heisler and M&W, built auxiliary gearboxes for the H and M which provided 4 additional speeds to fill the gap between the ~5MPH 4th gear and the ~15MPH 5th gear. Tractors equipped with these are commonly called 9-speeds.

9-speed was not a factory option, it was installed aftermarket by a mechanic at the dealer.

I suppose that Ms were built with 7 different speeds available but you only had 5 on any one tractor.

I think they could be ordered with either a low speed 1rst or a high speed 4th?

thank you for the clarification. I was also told that the serial number would identify a Louisville 9 speed. That must be incorrect as well, being an add-on?

IH made a experimental M with I think 8 forward gears that survived being scrapped, but not at Louisville.
