cub fuel system

I bought a cub yesterday supposedly to help settle an estate. It is a pretty nice old cun with good tires and a fast hitch. I was going to try to start it this mor4ning. I found the carb, settling bowl and fuel line clogged with black sticky thick goey gunk. This stuff has to be scraped out and that is a job. Carb cleaner won't touch it till the bulk of it has been removed, I've heard of putting sugar in a gas tank to settle a score but have never seen the results. I have spent 4 hours just on the carb and settling bowl. the gas lines get thrown away as cleaning them would be much more trouble than they are worth. Did someone sugar this tractor?

Boiling the tank would be a good idea. For the carb, bowl, etc. I would get a bucket of chem dip from Walmart. Made for cleaning carbs and engine parts. Can get it for about 20 bucks. I got a bucket of it myself. Worth a shot.

i've seen many carbs fouled by old gas varnish but this is something I've never saw before. It's much thicker than tar. Chem-Dip won't touch it till it has been scraped up some.
I have the carb clean and also the bowl and will boil the tank good before reinstalling it . thanks for the help/

For carb.'s that bad ya need the stuff that i use and it DOES NOT come from Wal Mart's . This stuff will remove hide from your hands i vary short order . If you are trying to use the spray stuff save your money and time . Find pro that has the nasty stuff .

Definitely not sugar. Last I knew, sugar doesn't dissolve in gasoline. The sugar would've had to melt to become any sort of sticky gooey substance. If it got hot enough to melt the sugar in the gas tank or carb, the tractor would've burned to the ground.

(quoted from post at 11:56:00 01/23/15) [b:9c73e986dc]Plain old white vinegar will remove the old crud, just let it soak.

Vinegar is not a good idea. It will dissolve the pot metal, ruin the whole thing.

What's the stuff you use? What I got works pretty good but there is ALWAYS room for improvement. If its better I'll get that instead next time.

A handheld propane torch run along the length of the fuel line will melt that black crud. Make sure it is off the tractor.
