Help With Fast Hitch Sickle Mower

I have a Farmall 400 with fast hitch. I would like to find a sickle mower to fit. I'm not familiar with the models that were made. Did IH make a large point sickle mower to fit a 300, 400 etc? The only ones that I can find are small point. I have an opportunity to buy a small point sickle mower in average condition for $750. I feel that is a little high but any sickle mower is hard to find here in east texas. What are your thoughts? I need to find a sickle mower by spring, I would be interested in a 2 point, mid mount or trailer type. Anybody know where I could find one?

Can't help you find a mower but don't let the small points hold you up. Just simple strips of 1/2 by 1 bar stock at the bottom of the sockets will adapt a small point implement to the large hitch. Poke a 2" long roll pin through the end (across the long way) to keep them from sliding back into the sockets. Adapter shims like this were even in the Farmall parts catalogs so it is a "factory approved" part.

Small point with shims will fit your hitch but a mid mount would be a mowing machine. We had a new mid mt. mower on a Farmall M in probably the early 60's.

I've got a large point, 7 foot Fasthich mower I'd love see go to a good home. Only problem is it's in Northern Cal.
Pay my fuel and I'd bring it to ya. Been lookin for a reason to go to TX ;-)

Had one back in the day. It was a model 28 (I THINK). Had the small points but was shimmed up to work on a F350. Later cut the shims off and used it on a super C.

Thanks for the replies everybody. So what do you think of the $750 price tag? State of Jefferson my email is open. Send me some details. I might be interested, fuel keeps dropping here.

You always want to get the best price, but price is all relative. Relative to the value of the work it will accomplish and the retained value. It's not money spent, but money invested.
If you have money sitting in the bank, it isn't keeping up with inflation. You just as well invest in the mower and get some use out of it.
When I can't justify, I rationalize.

I would not pay $750 unless it was exactly what I needed and in great condition. Your problem here is that you are focused on an IH fast hitch mower and are getting jacked up on the price because you are not considering the alternatives. You can put a FH draw bar on that tractor and open up your alternatives considerably. One of the 100 series IH mowers in semi mount or trailer style will get you by then. With the draw bar attached you can also consider a lot of MUCH cheaper mowers from JD, New Idea, etc. Use them in the interim and then wait for the right mower at the right price.

"A mower in average condition" is pretty vague.

$750 is a lot for any old sickle mower in any condition.

Depends on which mower it is. If it's a modern balanced head mower, and average condition means it spent most of its life inside and still has the red paint and decals on it, then $750 isn't so bad.

If it's a rusty old pitman mower, keep looking.

Down here you find ANY fast hitch implement, small or large prong ....it is obviously worth it's own weight in gold. That is when and only when one comes along.
I believe they are much more prevalent in the northern Midwest, but anytime you see the words fast hitch, that equals $$$$$$$.
A two point drawbar, and pull type equipment is much easier to obtain, still not cheep, but much more available.
You can find reasonable two point implements from time to time, but you had better be quick, they don't last long at any price. If it's what you want, and within driving distances, bring a big sack of money & jump on it.

im in east tx and may be able to help you find one but im not shure if it would be a fast hitch maybe a pull type or three point if your interested ill see what I can find shoot me an email
