Getting back to the project. When I left it the last time I was very frustrated with it. My problem now is that I can't turn the motor over. I tore the motor down. Reassembled. Everything turned fine. Actually quite easy. Put the reconditioned head on, torqued it to specs. Put on the other goodies including a starter. Try to start it and it will not budge. I cannot get the crankshaft to turn at all, just like it's stuck. Not sure what to do. Should I back off on the head bolts? Any other ideas?
 
If you reinstalled the same starter that came off the tractor, I would at a minimum loosen the mounting bolts. If that doesn't do it, completely remove the starter and try to turn it over with the hand crank.
 
Need more information. No loosening the head studs should not make any difference.Nothing in the head should keep it from turning unless maybe a stuck valve but you could still turn it backwards. What have you tried as far as turning it over? I guess first thing I would try is a bar in the yoke behind the clutch and see if it would turn either way by hand. Like Dave says, something in the starter could be binding. If it does not turn over either way by hand try removing the starter and see if that helps.
 
yes , need more info. are you doing this overhaul with the engine in tractor or out? is the rod brgs. set to correct spec.? you have to turn the engine over to adjust valves.no mention of that. are you turning it over with a crank or starter? you should know right away once head is on whether it will turn over, as its standard procedure to turn an engine over for valve adjustment. head bolts have nothing to do with turning over unless for some reason you have some crazy pistons in it that are too tall. like is this original stuff your talking about?
 
Did you put the rod caps on dry? I had a similar problem by tightening the rods on a dry crank. Now I put some grease on the crank before I do the final torque.
 
The block was out of the tractor. Everything was tight. Replaced sleeves and Pistons. Crankshaft was redone and bearings were rebabbited and sized to fit with spacers. At this point I could easily turn the engine over. Flywheel was installed and then dropped the block back on the frame. I could still turn the engine easily. I had some difficulty getting the starter mounted. It was a very tight fit. After reading some of the other posts, I think I will loosen or remove the starter to see if I can turn the engine over. Thanks for the info.
 
Back off the rocker arms and if the engine will rotate, it may be a stuck valve.

Seems to me like a freshly overhauled engine will sieze from the rings sticking to the bores sooner than an old worn engine will. I've seen it happen twice. A D19 gas and an Oliver 77 gas. I have no explanation as to why.
