'49 M with late model motor (photos)

'49 M I picked up last spring with replacement motor. "H" casting date should be 1963 if I counted correctly. I was a little surprised that they kept the same part number for the head.

It has fire crater pistons and is pretty clean inside. One cylinder was dark and probably got wet. Water jacket, thermostat housing etc, was pretty rusty. All the water had been drained but this thing came from west Texas and I'll bet they ran some nasty well water in it or something. The jacket cover/baffle was all eat up so I replaced that too.

It should be operational in another week or two. Pulled cover and cleaned out rear case/trans. Replaced every seal on rear case, pilot bearing and input assembly bearings, re-lined clutch disk. Have left to re-install radiator, gas tank, steering, re-wire, four tires and three point.

Centex think H is 62. Didn't start casting the 8574DC until in 55. Before that D to DB. Some industrial engines used that head size combustion chamber after the end of SMTA production.

Are you sure that isnt a motor from a power unit as the plate shown is where a fuel pump was used and that wasnt there on a tractor engine.

I doubt IH was casting two different blocks for an M and a power unit in 1962/1963. One block, take the pump cover off and put a pump on if it's going into a power unit.

Some of the W-6 and M parts books show that's the block casting number you got when replacing blocks without a drilled and tapped fuel pump mount. Could also be a mostly complete service engine. Not sure if IH was still selling 248 service engines at that date though.

62 it is then, I thought I was off a year or two when I posted but it was late.

I had forgotten about the displacement pad under the part number (obscured in the one photo). Scraped it off and it claims to be a 248. Dipstick boss is there too, capped off.

The part number is the same as The other replacement block I have in a '52 M, and is from 58 or 59. That one was either a block only or short block. The date on the head is about right for the tractor and it has step head pistons. Runs good.
