1086 Boost Levels

Hmmm, I thought it would be more than that. Has anyone used a larger turbo and limited the boost with a wastegate ?
 
There is probably a wastegate model that might work by now. IH Blue Ribbon service book has the intake and exhaust pressures listed with the pump specs, most exhaust pressures run about 2 PSI less than the intake for a good match. For best results an intercooler should be used no matter what turbo is used above 15 PSI. Compressor outlet temps really start to climb, even 190 degree water temp will cool the air back down. Hugh McInnes Turbochargers book shows how the air outlet can be 400 degrees or more as the pressure rises.

Yes, you are correct an intercooler is always a good idea even at lower boost levels. On my play toy drag car Im running twin 76mm T4 style turbochargers. Back when I was on gasoline I ran a air to water intercooler with a remote water tank that I used ice water in. Sitting on the starting line in average summer time air Id see intake air temps in the lower 40's and by the end of the 1/8th mile it would be in the 70's. Now that Im on methanol I have removed the intercooler system as the methanol will cool the air charge.

Im looking to turbocharge my 986 and looking at going with a wastegated set up, my even do a air to air I/C. Do you happen to know what the AR on the exhaust housing is for a factory turbocharger ?

Good idea to keep things mild on that 986 unless you remove the crankshaft and install the piston cooling nozzles. BTW, they're over $200.00 each new, you'll need to find a source for good used ones.
 
The Blue Ribbon service book I was looking at says there may be a chance that some non turbo blocks will have the cooling jets too. It also showed three different oil pump gear widths, early non turbo 5/8 inch, turbo 7/8 inch. Late engines turbo 1 inch plus, non turbo 7/8 inch. I've never had the pan down on a 986, might be worth a look to see if the jets are in place.
 
The turbo charged 400 series engines should have 12 piston cooling jets installed in them. The NA engines should have 6 cooling jets and six steel balls installed in the holes where the other six jets would go.
