Fuel filter in sediment bowl on H?

I have a 54 super h and unfortunately don't use it as much as I should, because of this I've had some fuel breakdown issues and had to flush the carb a few times to remove sediment. Does anyone run a fuel filter inside of their sediment bowl? I've seen this a few times at the county fair with the pullers, really hoping someone might have a filter and part number that would work on my super H.

Usually the fine screen in the top of the sediment
bowl and the screen in the inlet going into the
carb will be enough. If your sediment bowl has had
the screen removed they can be bought at most auto
part stores.

The use of a filter is usually an indication of rusty or contaminated tank. In a gravity fed system there is little pressure to push fuel through a conventional filter. NAPA and others sell filter (self contained in line style) that are designed for gravity systems. Cleaning is best, followed by an appropriate filter if needed. Jim

I've used a Mr. Gasket in-line gas filter on my
Super H for 15 years. The sediment bowl and filter
screen are not a real effective filter. The Mr.
Gasket filter even filters out water. I've used them
on small engines for 30 years.

Do a search on Summit Racing's site for Mr. Gasket.
It's a whole $8.95 plus shipping and handling.
Installs with included hose barbs and a couple worm
gear hose clamps. The filter has a clear glass outer
sleeve so you can see if it's dirty, and it comes
apart for cleaning and the filter element is
reusable.

Thanks for the suggestions. The tractor was completely restored 4 years ago which included a tank liner due to some rusting that had occurred. After restoration I put some fuel in there with no stabilizer (I know not very smart) and the tractor sat for a year or so. I've since cleaned the tank and carb but still have a little bit of residual gunk behind the baffle that is breaking free. I was hoping there might be a filter I can use to retain the stock appearance and save me from another carb tear down and cleaning.

You might want to address truckers comments first.

I'm sorry, yes there is a screen in the sediment bowl.[/quote]

If it is the proper screen and properly installed it should catch the stuff and settle it out in the glass bowl.

And is the screen in the carb inlet?

I eliminate the sediment bowl all together and replace with the
pictured assembly. This allows a full 3/8" opening into the bottom
of the tank. big chunks fall into the dirt leg and are easily cleaned
by removing the cap. 3/8" ball valve allows for positive shut off.

I use a filter from NAPA Works perfect.

I installed a 1 1/2 in stand pipe in the inlet of sediment bowl in the tank. Used copper tubing & soldered it in place. This keep the "stuff" settled at the bottom of the tank. I remove the sediment bowl when the tank is "empty" and drain the remaining gallon or so twice a year & use this residue for weed killer. No problems in three years now.

One thing I did was roll up a cigarette-sized roll of fine screen wire, and epoxy it into the inside of the pipe that threads up into the gas tank. It stops sediment / rust right there, inside the tank, before it gets to cause mischief downstream.
