Just picked up a international 444 diesel yesterday. It Was able to start when I arrived but when he tried to restart it, it tried but would not turn over.
tried to pull started with truck in 3rd and 4th gear the wheels spun but did not start the engine. He just sold it to me as is. Should it have started by pulling it? Also where should I go from here? I'm sure it had been sitting for a long time. Not real familiar with diesel motors.
Thanks

no they are not working but he started it real easy with the starter motor when I got there.I just never popped a clutch on a diesel didn't know if you could. What do you think?
Thanks so much for writing back.
Have a great day. Jim

Pull starting any mechanically geared tractor should be done with it in the highest gear possible, with a Hi/Low shift in Hi. The 444 should be in 4 High (8th) gear. Any other gear selection will be difficult if not impossible to overcome the ratios to turn the motor, especially with a diesel. If it was running, it should be able to be pull started.

Not that you need to know this, but perhaps for a few others reading this, it should go without saying to make sure the brakes work ok before you pull it, and you shouldn't need to be going more than a couple miles per hour with the pulling vehicle.

Torque Amplifier (TA) transmissions are the exception, which ordinarily can't be pull started.
