Does anyone know how many class 8 trucks where built with the IH V8? Has anyone on here had any experience with these engines in the truck application? How is the power and reliability? I have a chance to buy a truck with this engine and looking for any info about them.

Not sure which engine your asking about but I have 2 10 wheel IH trucks with a V-8 in them big gas engines in the 600 plus cubic inch class. Also have a 8 wheel truck that had a 345 V-8 in it

The IH dealer I worked for years ago had one. The truck was in the shop more than on the road. Would break down just close enough to home to tow it back. Used an IH with a 345 V8, tough as nails.
Would not recomend the 550.

The V8 diesel was a bigger piece of junk than the first diesel that GM built from the Olds 350 block. They would sell for 2 to $3000.00 less than the same truck with a Detroit.

Only IHC truck I recall with the DVT 800 was in the late 60's. It was a tandem axle road tractor was owned by an independent trucker who hauled sand for the local concrete block plant. The tractor was traded for a Cummins-powered White "Road Boss" after only about 3 years of operation.

Incidentally DVT 800 was also used in a few larger Payloaders, Payscrapers, etc. of the era. But like the sand hauler's truck these did not seem to be long-lived either - certainly not like the Cummins, Cat and Detroit-powered competition.

The local IH dealer had a 4070 Transtar with the 800 v8, it was a 1979 or 1980. It was used when he got it and he ran it for about 10 years before he parked it. The help said it cost too much to keep it on the road. It sat in the back corner of the used lot for many years, it disappeared about 2 years ago when they cleaned up some of the old junk..
